Harry ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, Jr., Harry Loy

The family and friends of Harry Loy Anderson, Jr. mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Harry Loy died on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at Hospice of Palm Beach County, after a long illness and battle with Alzheimer's. He was 70. Born July 13, 1943, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of H. Loy and Therese (Arceneaux) Anderson. Harry Loy attended Admiral Farragut Academy where he graduated with honors, and then went on to Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, before earning a bachelor's degree from Florida Atlantic University. He was a long time member of the Young Presidents Organization, Inc. and attended Harvard Business School as a member of the Young Presidents Organization's Executive Education Program. Harry Loy always wanted to be a banker and was part of a family of bankers. His father, H. Loy Anderson, Sr., was President of Palm Beach County's largest financial institution, First Federal Savings & Loan, in the 1960's and early 1970's. In 1970, at age 26, Harry Loy became the youngest bank president in the nation when he became President of Worth Avenue National Bank. Up until his retirement, Harry Loy served as President of Colonial National Bank, located on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach, Florida. Harry Loy was also the former President and Chief Executive Officer of several other Palm Beach County banks, including Palm Beach National Bank and Trust Company from June 1990 to October 2002; President and Chief Executive Officer of Florida National Bank of Palm Beach County from 1976 to 1990; President of Royal Trust Bank of Palm Beach from 1976 to 1984; and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Worth Avenue National Bank from 1970 to 1976. Thanks to Harry Loy's unique leadership style, these banks were all known for their "old world charm and a friendly ambience". Although primarily a banker, Mr. Anderson's long business career included turns as a restauranteur, a citrus grower and a developer. He was also a leader in several business organizations, including the Young Presidents Organization Inc., the Banker's Association, the Economic Council of Palm Beach County, the Kiwanis Club and the Worth Avenue Association, for which he served as Chairman. He served as a former Director of the Mediplex Group, Inc. from 1991 to 1994; and was a former Director of Care Matrix Corporation. He was past Director of Central Bank of Palm Beach County, and Overseas Development Corporation. He also formerly served the Advisory Board of the Rinker School of Business at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Mr. Anderson was also co-owner with his wife, Inger, of Palm Beach Groves, Inc. originally located in Lantana, Florida. Mr. Anderson volunteered and served generously on many government, service and faith based organizations, including the following: Historical Society of Palm Beach County; the YMCA; the United Way; Rosarian Academy; the Leukemia Foundation; the Boys Scouts of America; Founder of Inner City Program for Underprivileged Children; Chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for the State of Florida, Banking Division; former Board Member of Hanley Hazelden Foundation; and former Board Member of the Palm Beach Fellowship of Christians and Jews. Harry Loy had a strong Christian faith and was an elder and long time member of the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church in West Palm Beach, Florida. For many years he shared his faith by leading weekly Bible studies in his home or office and he left a lasting imprint on the lives of his family and many friends. He was Chairman and a founder of the Academy of the Palm Beaches (formerly known as the Children's House of Palm Beach, Inc.), now part of and known as Palm Beach Day Academy. Mr. Anderson was totally involved in charities since he was a young man. In his thirties, Mr. Anderson was very involved with the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Red Cross and served as its Chairman. He served on their Executive Committee and was Chairman of the Planned Giving, Finance, and Public Support Committees. He organized and founded the Young Friends of Red Cross, a strong supportive arm of the Palm Beach Chapter of the Red Cross, which sponsored a New Year's Eve Gala that was so successful that it achieved national attention. Mr. Anderson served on the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. Mr. Anderson was named the Outstanding Man of Palm Beach by the Palm Beach Daily News in 1981. He was presented with the State of Israel Gates of Jerusalem Award in 1985, and the Sue Whitmore Award from the American Red Cross in 1985. In 1987, he received the Harriman Award, the highest award given for distinguished volunteer service from the National American Red Cross. In 1988, the State of Israel awarded him Israel's prestigious Peace Award. He is an Honoree of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Survivors include his beloved wife, Inger, and his six children, Mary Ellen Stone and her husband, Roman of Des Moines, Iowa; Allison McCranels and her husband, Scott of Palm Beach Shores, Florida; Harry Loy Anderson III, Poul Kent Anderson, Bettina Anderson and Kristina McPherson and her husband, Brad, all of Palm Beach; his three grandchildren, Christian Miles, Camilla McCranels, and Hampton McPherson; his sisters, Andrea Hersey of Jupiter, Florida, Therese de la Valdene of Tallahassee, Florida, and Denise Hanley of Palm Beach, Florida; and his nephews and nieces, Scott Salisbury, Laura Witham, Valerie de la Valdene, Johnny de la Valdene, Drew Hanley, and Blake Hanley. Oh my Papa,
I miss you so much and I think about you all the time. I wish I could still get the advice you were always so good at giving me. I miss our talks and our lunches. You were so special to so many people, and so many people came to your funeral, you would have loved it. Sing Papa, one of your songs, I know I will hear you

I was very fortunate to work with Mr. Anderson for the last ten years of my banking career. I will never forget the love he had for his customers and employees, many times he told me: Leonor, let's roll out the red carpet for our customers and we did, every person was special for him. Our customers, he called them friends, loved him back with the same passion.
His presence in a room was electrifying. I remember him with respect and gratitude.
To Inger, Loy, Kent, the twins, Mea and Bebe all my love.

I will never forget Mr. Anderson. He welcomed me with open arms years ago and made me feel right at home when I managed the Worth Ave office in Palm Beach. Today , after the beautiful celebration of his life; I went back to my office and recalled our wonderful conversations! Impeccably dressed, with a smile bigger than life, he would sit there across from me and say: " Ok, Grace, what are we going to do today to exceed our clients' expectations?." He had incredible charisma and a genuineness that disarmed many. He exuded a kind warmth that was a true testament to his strong faith in his Lord and Savior. I am privileged to have known him and honored to have been one of the countless recipients of his kindness and inspiration. He is, undoubtedly, smiling upon us now!
Until then,

Blessings!

20 years ago , Harry Loy and family, brought me to Florida from the Bahamas to Restore their home on Lake Trail. Never was I treated like an employee, but a member of the family. I lived with them and shared good times of family and dinners. The Andersons are a family of Love and passion and compassion. A blessing to have know Harry Loy and I give thanks to H. Loy , Inger and the family , for the open door to a new life here in Florida and Loy's Grace and good character in how he treated me and all others around him. The Anderson smile is alive in all the children, warm and charasmatic . I still have my Bible that Harry loy gave me with my name monogramed on it. Blessed to have known him and appreciate the friendship and opportunity to have met him. He lives on with the great things he's done and in his family and friends. I will not forget you. Thanks for your guidance and friendship. A Prince among men. Christopher Perrotta
