Family-Placed Obituary

IRVING JOSEPH HALPERIN Died in West Palm Beach, FL, on December 17, 2009. He was born on Staten Island, NY, November 14,1923, to David Halperin and Annie Altman Halperin and lived on Staten Island and in northern New Jersey until he moved to Florida in 1979. Mr. Halperin graduated from Parks Air College (now St. Louis University Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology) in East St. Louis, IL, in 1942 with a bachelors in aeronautical engineering. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from February, 1942 until November, 1945, as a flight engineer and navigator on B-17's, a bomber aircraft. Upon his separation from the service, he worked for a time for his father and then joined Aeroil Products Company in South Hackensack, NJ, from which he retired in 1979 after twenty-nine years. Mr. Halperin was a licensed Coast Guard captain and operated a charter fishing company, Captain Spider Charters, Inc. out of the Sailfish Marina on Singer Island from 1979 to 1995 when he retired. "Captain Spider" was a member of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club for many years. Mr. Halperin volunteered for a number of years at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park on Singer Island and Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach. He had a great interest in the natural world, in particular birds, and had a large collection of photographs of the birds of Florida. He is survived by his wife, Diane Childress Halperin, of 33 years; his step-son, Benjamin Lazar of Woodstock, GA; Benjamin's wife, Laura and two step-grandchildren, Madeline and Abigail; his sister, Lillian Gottlieb of Boynton Beach, FL and her husband, Herbert; his nephew, Bruce Gottlieb of Boulder, CO; his nephew, Robert Gottlieb of Tucson, AZ; his sister-in-law, Lenore Herrmann and her husband, Kurt of West Palm Beach, FL; his nephew, Mark Halperin of Livingston, NJ; his niece, Ellen Royer of Las Vegas, NV. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Sunday, January 3, 2010.
