SLADE, Joan
Joan Slade passed away at the age of 94, April 14, 2015. Joanie as she was known to her family, friends, and associates, was born Ilsa Levy in Stuttgart, Germany on April 8, 1921. She immigrated to the United States in her teens where she met and married Fred Slade who predeceased her in 1974. Joan was a loving mother of three sons: Michael (Corinne) of Jupiter, FL; Peter (Judy) of Fort Mill, SC; and Gary (Carolyn) of West Palm Beach, FL; beloved grandmother, Oma, of six: Jeffrey, Debra, Shannon, Kerry, Jared, and Josh; great-grandmother of eight; and great-great-grandmother of one. Joan and Fred moved to Florida from New York in 1962. Joan served as a school crossing guard for many years in North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. After Fred's passing, she worked part-time at the Breakers Hotel and experienced one of her proudest moments when she was awarded the Breakers Hotel Five Star Award. She also was a dedicated volunteer at Gardens Medical Center for almost twenty-five years where she was loved and respected by all those with whom she worked. For many of those years, Joan was honored for the most hours of any volunteer, often exceeding 1,500 a year. She was also honored by the President's Council of Volunteerism. Joan lived in Prosperity Oaks for the past fourteen years, was active in the community, and was always ready to jump in and help where needed. Those whose lives were touched by Joanie were fortunate indeed. The family invites friends to visit from 1:00PM to 3:00PM, Saturday, April 25 at Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Home at 754 U.S. Hwy. 1, North Palm Beach. A private family gathering will follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center Auxiliary, or a charity of your choice.
