Family-Placed Funeral Notice JOHN A. MURPHY 89, formerly of LaCrosse, WI and a resident of Palm Beach since 1980, died on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at the Noreen McKeen Nursing Home. He was born on MArch 30, 1916 in LaCrosse to Michael P. and Anna O'Connor Murphy. John attended Marquette University where he met Margaret (Peggy) Tanner, who he later married on July 17, 1940. John and Peggy had six children: Peggy (Dudley) Morris of Santa Barbara, CA, Kathy (John) McGregor of Toronto, Canada, Maureen M. (Michael) Sund of LaJolla, CA, Patrick M. (Mary) Murphy of Tallahassee, FL, Dennis J. (Marian) Murphy of Owatuna, MN, and Kevin P. (Cindi) Murphy of 50 Lakes, MN. all of whom survived him. His wife, Peggy, predeceased him. After completing his studies at Marquette, John joined Gateway Transportation Company. He held various positions with the company eventually becoming the president and chief executive officer. John was a recognized leader in the trucking industry who held many national and regional offices among which were Trustee of the Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Health and Welfare and Pension Fund; Transportation Man of the Year in Wisconsin in 1970; Director and President of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association; and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Trucking Association, where he served as its treasurer and on its Finance Committee for 15 years. John held many commmunity and religious offices among which were director of the First National Bank in LaCrosse, WI, member of the LaCrosse Redevelopment Society, trustee of Marquette University, trustee of St. Mary's College in Winona, MI, and trustee of St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. John was knighted a Knight of Malta in recognition of his service to the Catholic Church. John was an active member in the Palm Beach community during the 25 years that he resided in Palm Beach. He served on the board of trustees of St. Edward Church; served as a director and president of his co-operative association; and was a member of the Old Guard Society; The Everglades Club; The Sailfish Club; The Beach Club; and The Bath and Tennis Club. John is survived by his children, 12 grand- children, and six great grandchildren.
