Mary O'MEARA Obituary

O'MEARA, Mary Elizabeth

Mary Elizabeth O'Meara, age 91, died on Monday, November 3, 2014 at St. Joseph's Assisted Living in Jupiter, Florida. Known to everyone as Molly, Mom was someone whose gentleness, kindness and humor will be missed by all who knew her. But most of all we will miss Mom as a devoted and caring mother. Maybe because she lost her own mother at the age of 14, Mom was determined to create a loving and safe home for us. In later years, when we would call, every phone conversation would end with the words "love you", and we all knew that this was the one thing in life of which we could be sure. Our mother was born Mary Elizabeth Roberts on March 10, 1923 in New Rochelle, New York. She was the daughter of George I. Roberts, Jr., a former New Rochelle councilman, and Florence Moss Roberts, who had studied art and design. One of seven children, Mom grew up in New Rochelle, where she graduated from high school in 1941. Sharing an apartment with her sister Jean, Mom held several jobs during the war years. After the war she met our Dad, David J. O'Meara, a returning Navy veteran who had served on a battleship in the Pacific. Mom described Dad as someone who would just start popping up at places to which she would go. They would have six children and remain together for almost 65 years, until our father's death in 2012. For most of their marriage our parents resided in Rye, New York. Mom was kept busy caring for us, working part time and being active in local school and church affairs. After Dad retired, they moved to Southbury, Connecticut and later to Jupiter, Florida. It was there that the visits from children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would be a source of endless pleasure for Mom. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph's Assisted Living for the care and love they showed our mother during her stay and final days there. A private service will be held in Southbury, Connecticut. Mom is survived by her sister, Jean Brickey of Southbury, Connecticut; her brother, Edwin Roberts of Bradenton, Florida; and her children: David O'Meara, Jr. of New York City, New York; Susan Harkness of Jupiter, Florida; Carol O'Meara of Salt Lake City, Utah; Patricia Allaire of Hamburg, New York; Kevin O'Meara of Watertown, Wisconsin; and Brian O'Meara of Poughkeepsie, New York.
