(1935 - 2013) Dr. Sharad Karkhanis, left this world for the Heavenly Adobe on early morning of March 28, 2013 at West Boca Medical Center in Boca Raton, FL from respiratory and heart complications. Dr. Karkhanis was born in a village in India near Mumbai and came to United States in 1963 with just a few dollars in his pocket. He studied hard, worked hard and earned his PhD in the land of opportunity and became very successful in a short time. He worked for the City University of New York for over 35 years and he was Professor of Political Science and Libraries since 1974. Presently, he was the Professor Emeritus for the City University. He wrote several books including "Indian Politics and the Role of the Press", "Cuban Missile Crisis" and "Jewish Heritage in America: A Bibliography" to name a few. He was honored by the Democracy Project as the Educator of the Year in 2008. He has achieved many acclaimed honors and has been recognized for many political papers. He was the Editor in Chief of an online newsletter called "The Patriot Returns", which was read by thousands in the political and academic fields. He was divorced and had no children. He was based in Brooklyn, NY but enjoyed his winters in Boca Raton, FL. He was energetic, upbeat, a veracious reader; enjoyed good company and had a flair for gourmet food. He has several nephews and nieces in the United States, closest being his nephew, Mohan, in Orlando, FL. Mohan may be contacted by email: [email protected]. He was cremated per Hindu rites. He will be missed immensely. May his soul rest in peace.

April 19, 2013

Rest in Peace my friend. If it were not for your encouragement to continue my education I would not be where I am today. Thank you for taking care of my best friend for the last 20 years. Your partnership with her brought the three of us together. We shared many laughs and sorrows over dinners and road trips. I will never forget your kindness to me and my children. I will miss you.

Dr. Karkhanis was one of the founders of APALA, the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association, and was that organization's first President (1980-1982). He was also President of the Library Association of the City University of New York (LACUNY) from 1967-1969. Sharad worked behind-the-scenes to help both individual CUNY librarians and library faculty as a whole. He will be greatly missed.
