Darrell Eugene Wood Sr., 82, Deer Park, Texas, died July 8, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was one of three children born to William B. and Lillian Wood.
He was a proud Marine and served in the Korean War. He was retired from Texas Parks and Wildlife and was an honorary retired firefighter of the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department. During his 22-year career as a firefighter, he was awarded the Gold Badge for rescuing a toddler who was drowning in a swimming pool. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting various items.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant granddaughter, Tiffany Michelle Wood; four nephews, Johnny Ray Sharp, Donnie Sharp, Mike Sharp and Billy Sharp; and a brother-in-law, Alvin Dreahn.
Mr. Wood is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda J. Napier Wood, Battletown, KY; five children, Linda Jones, Cypress, Texas, Darlene (Garry) Layton, Burleson, Texas, Darrell E. Wood Jr., Jasper, Texas, Vickey (Tim) Carwile, Battletown, KY and Cheryl Ritchie, Brandenburg, KY.; two sisters, JoAnn Dreahn, Schulenburg, Texas, and Charlene Sharp, Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous family members and friends.
The family chose cremation. Grandview Funeral Home in Deer Park, was entrusted with the arrangements.
