David "Papa" Edward Powitzky brought his humor and love of life and family to his Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2015. David is remembered by his friends and family as a man of intense faith with a strong and intuitive sense of right and wrong. His family was his pride and joy, and everyone was his family.
David was born on July 5, 1940 in Pasadena, Texas to Patricia and Calvin Powitzky, Sr. He attended Pasadena High School, along with his brother Calvin E. Powitzky, Jr. and his wife Patricia and his brother Robert J. Powitzky. He earned a football scholarship to Baylor University in 1958. While traveling to Waco, David wisely exited Highway 6 to visit Texas A&M University, which led to him immediately switching scholarships and schools and then graduating from Texas A&M in 1962. David was a devout Aggie football fan and father, sending both of his children to Texas A&M.
David dearly loved his country, serving in the Coast Guard for over 20 years and was an active member of the Pasadena Rotary club for over 50 years.
David married his bride, Carol Hlavinka Powitzky, almost 50 years ago on December 26, 1966. David and Carol lived in Pasadena their entire married lives, raising two children, Rachel Powitzky Steely and John David Powitzky.
David joined his father, Calvin Sr., in managing Powitzky Lumber Company for almost 35 years. Some of his customers became his best friends, fishing buddies and hunting partners. Every summer was spent in search of the largest redfish in Port O'Connor and winters were filled with hunting trips to Junction.
David and Carol spent most of their retired life enjoying their family, John David and his wife Kristi Powitzky, and their children Connor, and Cullen and Rachel Powitzky Steely and her husband Clay and their children Samantha, Caroline and Charlotte. Most days were filled attending softball, volleyball and baseball games or choir events. Most weekends were spent hosting sleepovers or family dinners. David's greatest joy was his family.
Family and faith are the central themes to the life of David Powitzky. His legacy is the bond that ties his family's love for each other, their Savior and their country.
The family would like to thank Daniel Vela for his devoted friendship.
A celebration of David's life was held on Wednesday. September 9, 2015 at South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas. A private family burial was held at Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard, Texas. Because David was a Charter member of South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena, please consider a donation in his name, David Edward Powitzky, to South Main Baptist Church, 4300 E. Sam Houston Pkwy S, Pasadena, Texas 77505 in lieu of usual remembrances.

David and I attented Texas A&M together where we became friends. I helped him with his school work and we had a lot of interesting experiences with that. He was a good guy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The death of a loved one can truly be a devastating time. Whenever I experience trying times like this, I think of Phillipians4:6,7 where it encourages us to turn to God in prayer and he will give us "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding." I hope this can bring you some measure of comfort.
