Gilbert J. Turner was born in Houston, TX on July 19, 1942 to Martin Turner and Frances (Cogswell) Turner. He passed from this life on Thursday morning, March 5, 2015 at the age of 72 yrs. He was preceded in death by both parents and by his younger brother, Ray Boyd Turner. He is survived by his loving siblings, June Engram of Corrigan, TX, Bruce Turner and wife Cathy of Pasadena, TX, and Roy Turner and wife Jo Ann of Houston, TX. He also leaves behind many caring nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, as well as his variety of patient caregivers.
Gilbert grew into his early teens in Pasadena, TX but spent most of his remaining years in various facilities in Austin, Texas City, Houston and finally back in Pasadena. Though his condition required care provided by others, he would have much preferred to have been independent.
He was quick to say "I love you" to his family and to his caregivers and was confident that he was loved as well. He always had artistic inclinations and up until near the end he was still doing about four drawings a week, always wanting them to be taken home and displayed, or tacked to his wall for others to enjoy.
In spite of his many difficulties and obstacles he generally had a positive outlook on his circumstances and kept his strong faith in God through it all. Even when he could barely eat he always wanted to say a prayer of thanks to his God, with reverently folded hands - and out loud! At one of his long time care home stays, when the group would sing hymns he would join in with words remembered from his childhood of attending church services with his Godly parents. Howbeit, due to his hearing and sight losses, he many times would be singing a different song than the rest- and usually with higher volume. He will truly be missed until we meet and sing with him again in the Heavenly home where his senses will be their sharpest.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 fat 10:00-11:00am at Advantage Howard Glendale Funeral Home, 1015 Federal Rd. Houston, Texas 77015. A Chapel Service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be held at Gradview Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas.
