Lillie Faye Mitcham Gilbert, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2011. She was born on April 22, 1926, in Milam County, TX, to Thomas and Lula Mitcham. Lillie graduated from Yoe High School in 1943, married Roscoe Gilbert on December 16, 1948, and moved to Pasadena, TX in 1952, where she resided for over 50 years. The very last two years of her life were graciously spent at Colonial Oaks Assisted Living in Pearland, TX.
Lillie is preceded in death by her parents; brothers G.B. and Clifton; sisters Irene, Lucille, Helen, and Dorothy; and loving husband of 54 years Roscoe Gilbert.
She is survived by her brother Tom Allen Mitcham of Rockdale, TX and her children and their families; son, Ron Gilbert of Houston, TX; daughter, Susan Gracia and husband Bert of Pearland, TX. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Jennifer, Timothy and Sarah Gilbert, Karen and husband Daniel Hawkins, Anneke and husband Lance Wakeland and Eleanor Gilbert; brother-in-law Leon Gilbert and wife Beverly of Jackson, MS; sister-in-law Juanita Owens of Cleveland, TX; and numerous other relatives and lots of friends.
Lillie was a remarkably energetic, meticulous woman who always seemed to make time for everyone. She was always the go-to person for her family and friends, helping in any way she could, as well as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Until retirement she worked as a bookkeeper for Gordon's Jewelry and then later South Texas Lumber Company for a number of years. Her handwriting was a true art. She loved to cook for a crowd, sew, bowl, play dominoes/42/84, cards and you name it. Lillie was an active member in Memorial Baptist Church, triple L club, and S.E. Harris County Senior Citizens group for as long as her health permitted. There was always a tub of Blue Bell ready to eat in her freezer or a bowl of candy ready for the neighbor kids who would quite frequently drop by!
Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Niday Fairmont Funeral Home, 6777 Fairmont Pkwy., Pasadena, TX, followed by services at 10:00 a.m. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m., Magnolia Cemetery, 811 Lilley-Yeager Road Loop North, Cleveland, TX
We will miss her nurturing, caring spirit as it has touched our hearts and lives forever.
