Maxine Atkins Johnson "Mim" passed into the arms of Jesus on January 11, 2012. Mim was born to Jesse and Lora Massey Atkins on August 8, 1930, in Lambert, Mississippi. Maxine and George Wesley (G.W.) Johnson were married in Coffeeville, and were married for 52 years. After following G. W.'s career to North Little Rock, Arkansas and Pasadena, Texas, G.W. and Maxine returned to Coffeeville.
A lifelong Christian and Baptist, Mim was a member of Coffeeville First Baptist Church, and was a former member of Second Baptist and Memorial Baptist Churches in Pasadena, Texas and Sylvan Hills First Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas. An avid supporter of all of her children and grandchildren's endeavors, Mim was a friend, confident Sunday School teacher, PTA president, G. A. leader, room mother, scout leader, tireless volunteer, and much more. Mim never met a stranger; her heart and home were always open.
Visitation was Friday, January 13, 2012, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home in Coffeeville, MS. Funeral services were Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Coffeeville with Rev. Larry Kilgore officiating. Interment followed at Broom Cemetery in Coffeeville, MS.
Mim was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lora Massey Atkins; husband, G.W.; son, James Wesley; sisters, Beth Hoagland, Vedell Shafer, Kathleen Sanders, Geraldine Brewer, and Vera Burton; and brothers, Malcolm Atkins and Jesse Atkins.
Mim is survived by her son, Joe (Regina) of Conroe, Texas, "God-Sent" son Harold Walden (Dot) of Sherwood, Arkansas; daughters, Gail Clubb of Augusta, Georgia and Roxie Johnson (Mike) of Spring, Texas. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jeff Clubb, Christopher Johnson, Roxanne Clubb Hutchinson, Markus, Riley, Jordan, Nicholas, and Chaselyn Johnson, Harold Walden, Jr., and Christa Walden Melton; and five great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Beverly Brewer Stark Scholarship Fund at Northwest Community College Senatobia Campus, Friends of the Coffeeville Library, Broom Cemetery Fund, or Wounded Warrior.
