EASLEY — James Robert Latham Gilstrap, 80, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017.
Born in Easley, S.C., on February 3, 1937 he was the son of the late John and Ruth Gilstrap.
In high school, he was the undefeated heavyweight wrestling champion two years in a row or the state of Maryland. After graduating from high school, Mr. Gilstrap graduated from the Naval Academy, where he became a Naval Aviator and served on the carrier U.S.S. Randolph, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, where he tracked Russian submarines. After serving in the military, he became a football coach for Pop Warner, where he coached for three seasons. He retired from Eastman Kodak, where he was in charge of quality control.
Mr. Gilstrap is survived by his son, Douglas Lane Gilstrap and his wife Leslie; daughters, Laura, Julia and Anne. Son James Robert Latham Gilstrap Jr; and grandsons James Robert Latham Gilstrap III and Grant Thomas Gilstrap.
The family has requested that no flowers be sent.
