Betsy J. Nugent, 97, passed away on June 12, 2021. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on March 16, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Leslie E. Jones, Jr. and Hildah Mann Jones. She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Clayton Q. Nugent, Jr.

Betsy graduated from Maury High School in 1942, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary in 1945.

She is survived by her three daughters, Catherine Hunter Costas, Betsy Pidgeon (Richard), Susan Nugent, and her son, Clayton Q. Nugent III; grandchildren Christopher Costas, Nick Pidgeon (Nathalie), Courtney Robertson (Ian), Ashley Holloway (Jason), and her honorary granddaughter Kiea Brown; and five great-grandchildren, Kane Costas, Isabella and Charlotte Robertson, and Berkley and Jackson Holloway.

The family would like to thank Sandra Mente for her loving care of both Clay and Betsy during the past five years, and also the staff of First Colonial Inn where Betsy lived for two years following the death of her husband, Clay.

Betsy was an avid birder, and a long-time member of the Virginia Beach Audubon Society. She led birding field trips for the Audubon Society and was an enthusiastic participant for many years in the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count. She was a member of the Virginia Native Plant Society, and a supporter of many wildlife and environmental organizations.

I'm thinking of Betsy Nugent today. She was a linchpin in the Virginia Beach Audubon Society and a mentor to nature lovers for many years. She once told me that beech trees hung onto their honey-brown leaves for most of the winter and you could hear the leaves rustle when the wind blew. Now when I hear the gentle swishing of beech leaves on my winter walks, they always
remind me of Betsy. I put a video of rustling beech tree leaves on both the Audubon Society's and my Facebook page.

Betsy touched the lives of many with her kind demeanor, non-judgmental attitude, and strong leadership. She was ready to talk about books, politics, ethics, history, local issues, and anything else, and was a good writer. We are remembering our years of birding together for fun and record building. Much of our knowledge of birds and native plants we credit to time spent with Betsy. She was an excellent teacher and finest person. And Clay provided good back-up. When we'd get home, he often could add whatever species had come to their yard that day. Peace and love to you.

Betsy was as beautiful a person as her red cardinals. And a wonderful neighbor
