Charles Fletcher Obituary

Dr. Charles Porter Fletcher, 95, was called by his Savior on Feb. 9, 2022 from his earthly house to the House of the Lord to live forever. "Charlie" was born and raised in Ocean View by his loving parents, Bluke and Catharine and attended Fork Union Military Academy. One of the last of "The Greatest Generation", he joined the Army Air Corps and attended Biarritz American University. Back home, he graduated from ODU, VA Tech and the MCV School of Dentistry. At MCV, he was a member of Sigma Zeta, the national science and mathematics honor society. Later, he received an honorary doctorate from EVMS and the Distinguished Alumni Award from ODU.

Dr. Fletcher loved his patients and enjoyed "every single day" of his fifty-year general dental practice in Kempsville. Fletchers Arch, a street near his office is named after him.

Always willing to serve his community, Dr. Fletcher was acting president of WVAB Radio Station, chairman of the board of AAA Tidewater, director and chairman of the Board of First Coastal Bank, chairman of the board of Virginia Beach Federal Mortgage Company, and director of First and Merchants National Bank of Richmond and the Bank of Virginia Beach, as well as, member and vice chairman of the VA Beach School Board and chairman of the Norfolk Medical Center Planning Board. Dr. Fletcher has been an active member in the Tidewater, Virginia and American Dental Associations, and was an advisor to ODU on vocational education and dental hygiene and a clinical instructor and guest lecturer. He was a Fellow in The American College of Dentists.

Dr. Fletcher is a former rector and member of the Board of Visitors of EVMS. Having been an EVMS trustee since 1991, Dr. Fletcher voluntarily served in leadership for more than three decades at the medical school. The Fletcher Conference Room, on the top floor of the Hofheimer Building on the EVMS campus was named in his honor.

Charlie attended church at Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay where he was able to help provide a sacred place for the Hoy Center, The Fletcher Prayer Room to honor his precious Juanita and the dedicated Hoy staff who cared for her there. The family would like to thank the Westminster Canterbury Hospice staff, who recently helped him at home. Previously, Charlie had attended First Presbyterian Church and served as an adult Sunday School teacher and an elder.

Charlie is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Juanita Underdown. Left to cherish his memory are his sister-in-law, Betty Miller, his nieces and nephews; his two daughters, Terry (Jim) and Catharine (Joe); his five grandchildren, Nathan (Melissa), Ben (Andrea), Elizabeth, Rebekah (Dean) and Chloe; and his five great grandchildren. A loving gentleman, Charles will be missed by many, but he lives because Jesus lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The EVMS Foundation.

A visitation is scheduled on Saturday February 12th from 4-6 pm at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday Feb. 13th at 1:30pm with a private family burial afterwards. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

Dr. Fletcher took a chance on me by giving me a job as a dental receptionist/assistant more than 40 years ago. I am forever grateful for this because I learned not only about the dental field, but also life, integrity, boat building, and my faith. I became a fan of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's insites through the radio program Dr. Fletcher listened to daily at lunch. The tribute written here about him by the family is touching. Condolences to all the family and thank you for sharing this synopsis of a life well spent.

It saddens us, our family and friends, to hear of the passing of such a "Special Person", as Dr. Charles P. Fletcher. From those of us who knew and loved him, as friend, he was to us family, friend, confidant, role model, historian and a blessing in disguise. As he passes from our earth, he takes with him a fellowship unsurpassed, to many families and friends, to mourn him in his absence. At 95, "Doc Charlie" inspired us all with his ageless wisdom and memory of history and travel. He related to his life endeavors, with details unexpected, he created a tapestry of gone-by years, but yet not forgotten, with a composition of stories and insights, he shared from his stellar life, which he lived to the fullest. We encouraged "Doc Charlie", on numerous occasions, to share his life and love, in a book to benefit all, but now, he will be sharing and attesting to his life with family and friends, who have gone before him, with the love of his life, Juanita, the Angels and Saints, and Our Lord and Savior, in Heaven. Amen and Rest in Peace, "Doc Charlie", you've earned it!!
Written in memory, the family of friends (PEEPS) who knew and loved "Doc Charlie" from Sentara Cardiac Rehabilitation Therapy Center. CTL
