Charles Wilkinson Obituary

Charles Wilkinson VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Army Col. Charles W. Wilkinson, a resident of Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, died Jan. 9, 2010 in his home. He was 94. He was a native of Mecklenburg County, Virginia, a graduate of Lynchburg College, Washington & Lee Law School, and the JAGC Advanced School of Law at the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1937 and practiced law in Giles County, Virginia, until entering the Army in 1941. During World War II, he served as an Anti-Aircraft Artillery officer in the North Pacific Theater. Later, transferring to the Judge Advocate General's Corps, he served as a trial lawyer in contract litigation, procurement specialist with the occupation forces in Europe, advisor in contract law to the office of the Secretary of Army, circuit judge in the U.S. Army Judiciary, and appellate judge on the Army Court of Appeals. He retired in 1970 after 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth C. Wilkinson; his son, Dr. William C. Wilkinson of Orland Park, Ill.; a nephew, William Bentley Wilkinson Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and numerous extended family. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity or to the Fellowship Foundation of Westminster Canterbury, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments of Virginia Beach will be handling the arrangements.
