I met David Nieves though work. I first saw him while attending Civilian In-Service training, he was pacing around outside role-playing a disgruntled citizen, which was a part of our active shooter training that day. Most recently he was one of the organizers/instructors of the first City Employees´ Citizen Police Academy I attended January - April 2021. Most memorable about David was his infectious enthusiasm, upbeat attitude, and bright smile. David´s passion for people and the community he served was apparent in everything he did. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone who knew him.

I am so thankful that I was able to spend a few hours with him at the beach while he was working the Ocean frontJuly 4th. I hadn't seen David in over 2 years, however it's like we never missed a beat. We laughed, joked and broke bread. He was full of life and almost seemed invincible with his infectious laugh and smile. He will be sorely missed, and his legacy will live on by others he inspired and helped throughout his life. We will never forget!

In 2017, Master Police Officer David Nieves partnered with our newly formed Safety Advisory Team to help St. Matthew's Catholic School improve safety and identify goals for the committee. He even offered to facilitate the Active Threat Civilian Response Training. At the time, we declined because we didn't think our faculty and staff were ready for that level of training. MPO Nieves' reply was, "That's OK. I'll be back, either to do the workshop or to draw chalk-lines.." From that moment on he was known as "Officer Scary" and a great partnership was formed.
He did facilitate the Active Threat Civilian Response Training for us in 2018 and helped us run drills. A staff member who had a robust dialog with MPO Nieves about the need for this training found out how important it was and how well prepared she was when a realistic lockdown drill was conducted.
In addition, MPO Nieves spoke with our students about internet safety. He also spoke at our PTG meetings and ran many lockdown drills to evaluate our progress. We will miss you MPO Nieves, but you did a great job helping us create a safer school. Rest in Peace.
To the Nieves family and VBPD - we send our deepest sympathies and prayers.

I had the privilege of working with Officer David Nieves while employed at Virginia Wesleyan College Security Department. He always had a smile and a kind word. He loved his family, the athletes that he coached, and being of service to others. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this most difficult time.
