David E. Trickler obituary, 1943-2020, Virginia Beach, VA

David Trickler Obituary

David Eugene Trickler, 77, passed away peacefully on Monday August 3rd in Virginia Beach. Dave was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 31, 1943 to William Eugene and Marjorie Wright Trickler, both of whom preceded him in death.

Dave and his brother Terry attended Prince George High School, where Gene and Marge were their biggest fans. Dave sprang onto the scene his sophomore year by filling in at quarterback and stunning a sellout crowd by accounting for eight touchdowns against heavily favored Smithfield. A local star was born, as Dave became well known for frustrating regional powerhouses with his accurate passing and elusive running ability. His flashy style carried over to the hardwood, as Prince George became the place to be on winter nights with "little Dave Trickler" running the fast break. He led the underdog Royals to the AAA state championship in 1961 and took his Colonial Heights American Legion baseball team to the World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dave went on to star at Hampden-Sydney College, where he played in all 91 basketball games of his collegiate career and became an All-Mason Dixon Conference shortstop for the Tigers' baseball team. He was inducted into the Hampden-Sydney Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999. Following a two-year stint at Rock Hill Academy outside Charlottesville, Dave was hired by legendary Headmaster J.B. Massey to coach and teach at Norfolk Academy. He went on to earn his Master's Degree in Education from William and Mary and succeeded mentor Royce Jones as athletic director in 1979, a position he held along with various others until his retirement in 2001. During his time at Norfolk Academy, he guided the basketball program to 573 wins from 1966-2001, one of the highest totals among all Hampton Roads coaches, and won two state championships in '85 and '92.

While Coach Trickler was most widely recognized as a basketball coach, his true gift was that whatever he happened to be doing, he made the experience more special for everyone involved. As long-time director of Norfolk Academy Field Day, his positive energy and excitement were contagious. Those who played football for Coach Trickler still talk with boyish excitement about the experience, recalling specific games or even their favorite plays. Mention the "Belly Pass" to anyone involved with NA football during a certain era and their eyes light up with excitement. "It's a great day to be a Bulldog," Coach Trickler was fond of saying, even though his influence carried far beyond the athletic field. He was an advisor to many students who tell some of the most poignant stories of his positive impact, many of whom never put on an athletic uniform. It is common to hear others remember their experience at a summer camp run by Dave Trickler in almost magical terms, and he truly did have a way of making people feel special, as if it was their involvement and not his, which was most important.

His family and friends will remember Coach Trickler for his outgoing and genuinely caring personality. He is survived by his three children, Stefanie Trickler Sheldon and husband, Mark, Brian "BD" Trickler, and Tyler Trickler and wife, Shanna; three grandsons, Parker, Owen, and Cole David Trickler, as well as his brother Terry and wife, Peggy, and their stepmother June Trickler.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Dave attended Grace Bible Church in Virginia Beach and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the David E. Trickler Scholarship Fund c/o Norfolk Academy, 1585 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502.

Coach Trickler was a great coach but more a great person!

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Coach Trickler. Although I was never an athlete on one of his teams, he always took the time to speak with me in passing during my days at NA. It seemed like he was always smiling and had something funny to say. Perhaps my favorite memory of him was when he honked his horn from the car behind mine to let me know I had left a bag full of money we had raised for the Senior Prom on top of the car! Good old Mr. Trickler saved the day for sure!

Dave was a big part of my PGHS experience along with other "renegade" friends. We had a lot of laughs and shared experiences. He was especially comforting when my mom died. His heart space and authenticity are admirable. My guess is he's still coaching, nay! playing, on a championship team. Phylis Tomlinson '61

Dave was an absolute stud in every way. I remember when I first started coaching at Rock Church Academy and everyone looked down their noses at me and our teams and our school.... Not Dave! Instead he did the opposite! He was kind and gracious and made himself available to me in the most authentic ways. He was a mentor and an incredible resource for all things basketball and Tidewater, VA to me. He was a true gentleman and a great coach! I am saddened to hear of his passing. I didn’t stay in touch with him when I moved from Virginia Beach in 1996 but I remembered him and thought of him fondly so many times. I hope his family knows of his far reaching positive impact on others in coaching and in life! RIP Coach Trickler!

My first memory of Dave originates from a motivational poster put up by Coach Al Cash in the Norfolk Academy locker room the week before our football opener against Prince George in the fall of 1960. Usually it contained the standard lists of strengths and weaknesses of our opponent and a brief description of what it would take to win the game. But this one was different - it focused on the other team's quarterback, saying we'd have to play our very best, we'd have to hit him hard, early, and often to slow him down and demoralize him. We had high hopes and a pretty good team (we went 4-2-1 for the season), But Mr, Trickler was too much for us as we lost 33-12. The next year found Dave and me as freshmen at Hampden Sydney. We were not close friends, but knew each other as classmates. It was always a pleasure to see Dave's skills on display on the basketball court and baseball field. But even more impressive was his modest and friendly demeanor. Later I was delighted to learn he was coaching and teaching at NA. Our paths didn't cross again in all those years, but my memories of Dave haven't faded. From now on, when I hear that country song "Humble and Kind," I'll think if Dave. Wish I could have seen him jump the opening tip against Fred Hetzel (All American,Davidson,6'9") in that pre-season game....

how many hampden-sydney guys remember Dave's ability to draw a charging foul, by coming to an abrupt stop, freezing in place with his arms by his side, in the path of an opponent. He got knocked on his butt many times with a free throw as his reward. something to watch.

I have wonderful memories of the 61 basketball tournament games. My parents piled us 3 girls in the car and often added one or 2 friends to travel to all those exciting games. I was in the class of 62, but remember Dave fondly. Sending love and prayers to all of his family.

David and I were great friends at Prince George in the early 50's. My Mother was one of the teachers when the school opened. Our fathers were stationed at Ft. Lee at the time. He was one of the best 3 sport athletes that I can remember. We stayed in touch during our athletic careers. He was one of the good guys.

I absolutely cherish my time with Coach T. In high school, I was blessed to become best friends with BD, and spent more time at Coach T's house than my own. My memories are rich and deep, and the special feeling I have for those times are a life's gift. God Bless you Coach Trickler. Love, Jenks

I played basketball at NCHS in 1970-73. Attended a Summer Camp run by Coach Trickler. He helped me work through some technical issues w/ my jump shot -very patient, professional and extremely kind. Even though we competed against his team he fixed my issues and I will never forget his kindness and willingness to assist. A great teacher, person and coach.

I am so sorry to hear about Coach Trickler. I was the quarterback on the first team he coached at Rock Hill Academy. I had been playing for three years but being an old quarterback himself he taught me a lot. We had an incredible undefeated season under his tutelage. He always had a positive attitude and conveyed it to everyone. Some of us had talked about a reunion soon. It will not be the same if he can't be there. He left us all some very fond memories and was a big part of our life. I am so sorry for the family.

Coach Trickler was a significant personal figure in a number of ways, and I, like so many others on our football team, felt he truly cared for us as people, and he even followed up many years after I saw him last. It was heartfelt, and we also had a good laugh. I will never forget him and I shouldn’t.

Dave will be remembered for his winning smile and easy-going personality. Realizing his God-given gifts of athleticism, Dave coached, motivating young Norfolk Academy athletes to seek victory by being the best they could be. Not only a good coach, Dave was a friend to many and will be missed.
Stefanie, Brian, and Tyler, you have made your father proud.

As a basketball official it was a pure pleasure to work Dave’s games. His knowledge of the game and his ability to get the best out of his players was amazing. It was also extremely entertaining to try to referee the game and listen to Dave talk to you. Dave is one of my all time favorite people. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

What a great guy and coach. I was luck enough to play for Coach Tricker at Rock Hill. He had a talent for making us feel special. Also had a great sense of humor. One Basketball game when we were getting beat Bad at halftime. Coach came in an said I put Skeeter in because I knew he would shoot but I could not believe he would make it. Everyone laughed and came out playing better. He knew when to be tough and when to say the kind word. Thanks for making my life better.

Coach believed in me.
Coach believed in most every kid who showed up to his door at NA summer camp.

Kids with lunch boxes stomping off those giant yellow buses as the heat began to swelter and whose parents could surely use the break from the constant exploration and energy of their 12 year old boys.
He was there ready with a ball on sunny, or NFL Films and indoor sports on the rainy, days with stories of Virginia basketball and baseball lore.
Coach Got me to 50/50 on my free throws at 12 years old and helped me lobby my parents to attend NA over CHC. An education at NA wasn’t meant to be as I followed my older cousin Jonathan, another constant camp attendee, to be a Dolphin instead of a Bulldog.
After my free throw percentage managed to get worse instead of better over the years Coach encouraged me to try bocce ball with Coach York, which I did. Gotttaa say I am still today a bit of a bocce ball shark because of this instruction, especially on grass, as sand doesn’t have the needed English backspin.
Later Coach T and I became friends often running into one another at various Lynnhaven River establishments near my place of work along the creek. Those coaching sessions were different than my youth but all the same absorbed and implemented with varying rates of success.

Losing both Coach York and Trickler within a few months of one another is rough news to the opposing sidelines in heaven this week, that’s for sure.

Much Love to his family,

Bubba Guthrie
