Donald Nash Obituary

Donald Hendrix Nash

Virginia Beach - Captain Donald Hendrix Nash was relieved of his duties with family at his side on June 23, 2017 at Westminster Canterbury on the Bay in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Don had an inimitable spirit of happiness and loving loyalty to friends and family young and old. Don was a family man extending his care for family members and he loved staying in touch with all his cousins and friends.

Born in Norman, Oklahoma on June 3, 1945 the son of Navy Captain Norman Clarke Nash and Mary Francis Hendrix Nash. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Donna Lamberth Nash and their 3 children; Meredith Nash Shields, Joseph Norman Nash, and Anne Marie Nash Burroughs. He was extremely proud of their successes in life and of his 4 handsome grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter, his "pumpkin bumpkin". He is also survived by his brother Major General Gordon Nash and brother-in-law Dr. Edwin Lamberth; their families and his cadre of special cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.

He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June 1969 and is also a graduate of Norfolk Academy. After a tour in Vietnam aboard the USS Ernest G. Small (DD 838) he reported to Newport, RI for Destroyer School. In 1971 he was Weapons Officer on the USS Steinaker (DD-863). Two years later Don was Flag Lieutenant and Aide to COMCRUDESGRU Eight completing NATO Sixth Fleet exercises during the 1973 Middle East War. His first Command was the USS Impervious (MSO-449) a minesweeper stationed in Mayport, FL where he won the Golden Anchor award for retention on a "reserve" ship that learned to love to go to sea. After graduating from the Armed Forces Staff College, he reported as Executive Officer of the USS Kidd (DDG-993) the guided missile destroyer earned the coveted Battle "E". Captain Nash then served in Washington DC as the Surface Warfare Community Manager on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. His first Major Command was the USS Scott (DDG-995) completing a new upgraded missile system conversion. In his 3rd tour in Washington DC he was Director of the House of Representatives Congressional Liaison for the Secretary of the Navy. His last Command was as the Commissioning and Commanding Officer of the Cape St. George (DDG-71) where he earned the Battle "E" twice and won the coveted USS Arizona Award as the most combat ready ship. Captain Nash later served as Atlantic Fleet Naval Surface Force Chief of Staff for the Office of Legislative Affairs. He concluded his naval career by serving as the Special Assistant for Information of the United States Atlantic Command.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious service medal with three gold stars, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Award, and other campaign and expeditionary medals. Don was honored by serving with members of Congress and the many men and women of the US Navy. In 1998 Don retired to be Information Systems Director for Logicon, and later Northrop Grumman.

In Norfolk, Don was active at Ghent United Methodist Church where he was Endowment Chair, Board Member and involved with daily congregational happenings. As an alumnus Don was an active USNA alumni association member and part of the newly established mentoring program, and a great supporter of the Class of 69 tailgates.

He is remembered affectionately for his perfectly fun and animated laugh which made it hard to forget him. He had special gifts of making a room come alive and making everyone who met him feel special because he believed in them. His family wishes to give special thanks to the nurses and aides who lovingly cared for him both privately and at Westminster Canterbury who have been so accommodating to him and his many family and visitors. To his family and friends Don couldn't have loved you more, your cards and well wishes, visits and hugs, gave him strength over the last several years. His entire family thanks everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and kindnesses during this time.

A Memorial Service will be held at Ghent United Methodist Church in Norfolk, VA at 11 a.m. on June 29th, followed by a reception at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and an inurnment at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ghent United Methodist Church Norfolk, VA and the mentoring program at the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Rd Chapel is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

**A Moment That Changed Everything**

It was just another afternoon aboard the USS Scott, attending an indoctrination class, learning about the support my Navy family would provide. Then came the knock on the door-my supervisor calling me out. My heart sank. I thought I was in trouble.

But nothing could have prepared me for the words that came next.

The captain stood before me, his presence commanding yet unexpectedly comforting. He told me my wife, Kathy, had been killed in a car accident that morning. The world stopped. My body went numb. My soul shattered.

And then, this burly Irishman wrapped his arms around me. He held me as I screamed, as I broke apart, as I fought the pain that surged through me like a storm. He held me as I grieved, as exhaustion finally overcame the anguish, and when I could stand again, he made sure I had what I needed-a way home, a way forward.

The crew had collected funds to support me. The Coast Guard arranged my transfer back to land. My shipmates stood by me, ensuring I wasn´t alone in my darkest moment.

I have never forgotten that captain. His strength, his compassion-he carried me when I couldn´t carry myself.

Some people change your life forever. Some moments stay with you always.

Captain Nash showed me that regardless of what others may have thought or said, he would take it all in, keep his own counsel, then make his decision......the hallmark of a TRUE leader, more should've followed his lead.
Bringing a ship to life through Commissioning can be a very trying experience especially if you aren't familiar with the gas turbine platform as you are with steam, Captain Nash was instrumental in calming my anxieties and having faith in my ability to persevere against my critics.

I wish all the best to the Nash Family as a whole and to Mrs. Nash (Donna) in particular. Zienna and I periodically look at those photos of us all at the Navy Ball on the Gulf Coast in our Dinner Dress Whites.

Captain Nash, Sir, Fair Winds and Following Seas, Rest in Peace,

I was stationed aboard USS Impervious when then LCDR Nash assumed command. All the things listed in obit are absolutely true. I was a head strong Bm2 and we often butted heads, respectfully, but I grew to admire his style of leadership. My transfer eval was the best I had ever received. I had a chance to reunite with Captain Nash. He was CO of Cape ST.George and I was Cw02. He wasn't aboard when I visited. Left him a note, Wooden Ships and Iron Men. I often tried to contact him after retirement. Sad to hear of his passing. Cw03 Bruce Smith, USN retired

Don and I were best friends in high school, co- captains of the football team. His parents were my second set of parents. Don's Dad, toutored me in math. His brother, Gordon, attended Hampden- Sydney as a freshman when I was a senior. When I returned from my tour in Vietnam Nam with the USMC in Jan. 1970, Don was the first one to call me, just to check in and make sure I was OK. Of course we arranged to meet in Sandbridgeto drink some beers. I hadn't seen Don in 6 years, but it was like we'd seen each other yesterday. I remember the night I first met Donna, the love of Don's life. He chased her for years and finally ran her down. A wonderful couple, made for each other, and a joy to be around. Don and Donna lived across the street from my sister in Norfolk so I have been able to keep tabs on the Nashes over the years. Don and Donna, as usual, the straws that stir the drink, hosted our 45th high school reunion at their home where a bunch of guys I haven't seen in 45 years were able to reconnect, all because Don wanted it to happen.
So, my friend, since all of the parts and pieces have worn out, it's time to come ashore and rest.

Please accept my heart felt condolences. I know Captain Nash had a wonderful career after our paths crossed on USS KIDD, but he was always the XO to me. He could get more out of me with a head shake and look of disappointment than a screamer ever could. We crossed paths several times after serving together and he always had a laugh and word of encouragement, even when the Cowboys beat his beloved Redskins. Many of the things I shared with my Sailors as Executive Officer of three commands, were learned at his feet. Fair Winds and Following Seas shipmate.

After a lifetime at sea I can say with complete clarity that Don Nash was greatest Sailor that sailed in my generation. As a Junior Officer working for him on Cape St George, he proved to all of us that honor was the most important thing that any of us possessed. His joy in doing what, taking ships to sea, was both obvious and infectious. My internal guidance thru 3 command tours was simple; what would Nash do? Don, I love you and will miss you terribly. There are just too many words to describe Don for he was one of a kind. He always had a smile, a hug, and kiss for me. He made everyone feel special. He worked so hard for his church to thrive. His enthusiasm was contagious. He was so brave in his fight .
I will never forget Don! I love Don and Donna.
