James Brydges Obituary

James (Jim) Edward Brydges, Jr. ,77, passed away peacefully in his home in Virginia Beach, VA, on January 18, 2020. Jim was born in Lynchburg, VA, the son of Helen and James Edward Brydges, Sr. He graduated from Duke University, and he received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Jim married the love of his life, Esther Gigliotti, on September 21, 1968, and the couple relocated to Virginia Beach, where he established a decades-long career as a trial attorney. Jim was the Senior Litigation Partner at TaylorWalker P.C., and he was a past president of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, a past president of the Virginia Beach Bar Association, a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation, and a member of the Boyd Graves Conference on Civil Litigation.

An avid sports fan and lover of Blue-Devil basketball, Jim lived an active life and enjoyed spending time on the golf course, in the gym, riding his bike, and, more recently, exploring his artistic side with a paintbrush in hand. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather, and a confidant and loyal friend to many. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, superior wit, integrity and dependability.

Jim is survived by his wife, Esther Brydges; daughter, Jennifer Overbo; son-in law, Todd Overbo; son, Brian Brydges; and four beloved grandchildren, Grady, Mia, Owen and Sawyer.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on February 27, 2020, at Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach.

Esther, I just learned that Jim is gone. What a loss.

He and were classmates and casual acquaintances at Duke, but in law school we were very close. I was with him in the high speed highway crash north of Charlottesville in '66, and I spent a lot of time playing rat league basketball with him. I remember meeting you in Charlottesville. Jim Gillespie mentioned the summer of '66 when he, your Jim, and I shared a shack on Pacific Ave in Virginia Beach.

All my memories of Jim are good ones. I always valued his friendship.

Please accept my deepest sympathy and extend it to the rest of your family.

Esther and family, Please know that Jim had many friends and admirers in our legal community; we mourn his loss with you. I consider myself privileged to have worked with him on many cases. I learned much from him and benefited from his wisdom and example. I was grateful for his spirit of hospitality expressed by including me with the Taylor Walker folks at VADA functions when I was the only one attending from my law firm. His kindness and wit left a lasting impression on most everyone who knew him. I pray that you will experience God's comfort in the days ahead.

Dear Esther, I am writing with sadness in my heart. Jim was a dear friend through three years of law school and a couple of summers we lived together when Jim was working for his uncle Dick. I was so honored when Jim asked to be best man at your wedding. I have so many happy memories of Jim; sweating out the bar exam together, pickup basketball, Jims dry sense of humor. I could go on. Jim was a good person. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Esther and family, Eileen joins me in expressing our deepest sympathies at the your loss of your husband Jim. We so enjoyed your prize winning raggedy Ann and Andy costumes at the Halloween party last fall! You and Jim made a handsome couple ,and we were pleased to know you both. I particularly enjoyed Jim at the PACC gym and he was always quick to smile. May the pain of your loss eventually heal with time. Sincerely, Bill and Eileen
