Paul Abernathy Obituary

Paul Abernathy

Norfolk - Paul Harold Abernathy

Charlotte Paul Abernathy of Charlotte and Portsmouth, VA passed away on June 5, 2015 in Suffolk, VA. He was born on August 19, 1963 in Charlotte.

Paul graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and furthered his education at Presbyterian College where he earned a degree in business. He was an original Charlotte Hornets employee and enjoyed working for them until they left Charlotte. At the time of his death, he was employed by Hall Chevrolet in Chesapeake, VA where he was well respected and made many close friends.

Earning his Eagle Scout rank was an accomplishment that he was very proud of. He enjoyed serving several years as a youth advisor at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Paul had a wonderful singing voice and sang in church choirs. He also shared his father's interest in woodcarving. After moving to Virginia, he discovered ballroom dancing where he found a second family. Paul was a true and loyal friend to many and was always willing to help anyone who needed it.

He is survived by his mother Doris Culp Abernathy; and sister, Janet Coleman (Frank) of Costa Mesa, CA; sister-in-law, Cynthia Abernathy of Charlotte; nieces, Laura Coleman Wright (Andrew) of Atlanta, GA and Ashley Coleman of Charlotte; nephews, Grant Coleman of Charlotte, Steve Coleman of Charlotte and Andy Benton (Jillian) of Indian Land, SC.

He was preceded in death by his father Harold Abernathy; and brother, Don Abernathy.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Sardis Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270; Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia, P.O. Box 1940, Norfolk, VA 23501 or to a charity of your choice.

I was saddened to hear of Paul's passing. I was a classmate of Paul's at Presbyterian College. My favorite memory of Paul is when he escorted me to a senior prom. I was student teaching in our senior year, and I was a chaperone for the senior prom. I just showed this picture to my high school daughter last week! My whisper from heaven from Paul I guess. Paul was a wonderful friend. I have many fond memories of our times in the theater. I reached out to Paul a few years back as my father is also an active ballroom dancer. I was so glad to hear he had found a passion. My prayers are for you all.

Paul was great co-worker and an even better friend. We worked together in the Hornets' front office and he was always kind and giving of this time and resources. He will be tremendously missed. May The Lord comfort the entire Abernathy family in this hour.

Paul was a one of a kind individual. As an original "Hornet" we all celebrated the high's and the low's. I will always remember how he could make me laugh. May he be held gently in the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I can't begin to count the great times Paul and I had in Scouts. (Go Python Patrol!) Always there to lend a hand, he was a hard worker with a smile and a positive attitude. A great voice in church choir, too. One of these days, Paul, we'll pick up where we left off telling jokes around the campfire.
