Phyllis Brown-Whaley Obituary

Phyllis Brown- Whaley

Norfolk - Phyllis Brown-Whaley, a Norfolk Native, born 1932, passed away peacefully in her Norfolk home on August 13th, 2015.

Proceeded in death by her mother, Marguerete Gygi and her father, Edward M. Brown, she was the widow of Westley Snow and Thomas Whaley.

Phyllis was a graduate of Granby High School and RPI (now VCU). A remarkably talented interior designer, she began her career designing window displays for Sears. After designing interiors for hotels, restaurant chains and furniture stores she formed her own design firm, Leopard Interiors. She designed custom home interiors throughout Hampton Roads, Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, New York, Florida and Israel. She also designed, built and decorated numerous homes of her own.

She led a rich and colorful life. Traveling the world her adventures ranged from diving on the Great Barrier Reef to exploring Machu Picchu. Phyllis was an exuberant, outgoing woman whose generosity touched many people.

Left to cherish her memory is her beloved partner, Glen Marten, her sons Edward B. Winslow (Stephanie) and Drew Winslow (Shelly), her grandson Eric Winslow (Shelly) and her "Sister-In-Heart" Carol Eltzroth.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday August 22 at 2 PM in the Norfolk's Church of the Ascension (405 Talbot Hall Rd 23505). In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church or the charity of one's choice.

I am just now seeing this. Bliven and Drew I'm so sorry you lost your mom . I wish I had known. Aunt Phyllis was a wonderful woman, full of life and excitement. I remember how she used to come to the furniture market in High Point and stay in my bedroom when I still lived at home. I used to love to look at her pretty clothes and admire her jewelry. I will try to contact you. Melodie Dunigan

I'm so sorry for your loss. I will be very much with you in spirit on Saturday as you celebrate a life well lived. I have no doubt your celebration of Phyllis will be every bit as wonderful as the lady herself!
I consider myself very lucky indeed to have enjoyed the gifts of friendship and love of such a remarkable woman for my entire life. Her indomitable spirit was a great example of how to live, love and enjoy life to the fullest. May your memories bring you comfort and joy!

We are so very sorry about the passing of Phyllis. JoAnn and I had many great times getting together with Tom and Phyllis. She had a truly fantastic life. She was a member of the NOSSOLANT/NAVSEACENLANT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION and attended many of our monthly luncheons. Glen was her constant companion in her last years and they both enjoyed their homes in Florida and Norfolk. Phillis was a one of a kind lady. She will be missed by all. Charlie Chapman

Phyllis and I had many fun adventures together traveling the world! Phyllis was always ready to take on any challenge whether it be an interior design of a home or office, taking helicopter flights, riding in a hot air balloon, piloting a small plane, diving in the Great Barrier Reef, walking on the Great Wall of China, or swimming with the manatees. She was a very generous, loving person and I will miss her so much! Glen Martin
