Phyllis Gimbert Obituary

Phyllis J. Gimbert
Virginia Beach - Phyllis Jeanette Nieting Gimbert, born Dec. 27, 1928 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, peacefully died on Nov. 17, 2012. She was surrounded by her beloved husband and children.
Phyllis was the daughter of Pastor Otto and Paula Schliepsiek Nieting. She is survived by her husband of 51 years Kenneth, son Church and wife Patti of Annapolis, MD, daughter Elizabeth Bubier of Virginia Beach, son Bradford and wife Michelle of Laurel, MD, daughter Heidi Mundy and husband Mike of Virginia Beach, grandchildren Weston, Caroline, Lindsay, Josie, brother Will Nieting and wife Joan of Townsend, MT, and sisters-in-law Salud Nieting and Dorothy Nieting along with many other dear relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her sister Eunice and brothers Lorenz and Edmund.
Phyllis was raised in both Newhall and Vinton, Iowa, graduated from Concordia Lutheran College (near Chicago), and earned a master's degree from Bowie State University in MD. She taught in elementary schools in upstate New York, Grand Rapids, MI, Japan, Germany, California, and Maryland. She sang in choirs and taught Sunday school in several churches. In a ceremony performed by her father in her brother Ed's church in Island Lake, IL, she was married to Ken. They raised their four children in MD, and, for three years, in England. Phyllis resumed teaching in Maryland, and she also taught and directed Christian education in St. Philips Church. She retired from teaching in 1989 and moved to Virginia Beach. Here Phyllis was active, including as leader of Bishop Gunn Circle at Galilee Episcopal Church. Among many jobs in the Linkhorn Garden Club, she was president and, for many years, the marathon bridge coordinator. She was a long-time member and past secretary of NARFE Seaside Chapter and member of the AARP Great Neck-Virginia Beach Chapter. Phyllis loved being at the center of social scenes with family and friends. She was grateful for all the blessings that the Lord gave her.
Her family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts, Laskin Road Chapel, on November 20 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
The celebration of her life and memory will be conducted by the Rev. Rob Kunes, Jr. and the Rev. Mark Nieting at Galilee Episcopal Church on November 21 at 2 p.m., followed by a burial at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. Well-wishers are encouraged to contribute in her memory to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, 23451 or to a charity of their choice.
