Robert Vaughan Timms passed away on January 14, 2023. He was born on August 14, 1933 in
Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Growing up in a valley region of Pennsylvania, he developed a love of golf and flying at an early age. In fact, a highlight of his life was obtaining his pilot's license while a college student. He and his Dad soloed and qualified for their licenses on the same day.
Bob enrolled at The Virginia Military Institute on the advice of a family friend. He was quite surprised by all the rules and regulations of a military college and spent his college career devising ways to avoid them. Against all the rules, he kept a car hidden at a discreet location off campus for in town jaunts when on leave from school. Although he did not love the rigors of military life, Bob was a very proud graduate of Virginia Military Institute where he developed and enjoyed some lifelong friendships. Following college, he moved to Virginia Beach where he became a pharmaceutical representative and a member of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and he assisted in evacuating people from their flooded houses during the disastrous Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962. He also joined the Princess Anne Country Club where he served on many committees and spent many happy hours perfecting his golf game. As a result, he won the Member-Member (twice), the Member-Guest, and the Shoot Out tournaments.
The majority of his career was spent in the financial services industry with Prudential Bache and later Wells Fargo Advisors. Upon retirement he split his time between
Vero Beach, Florida and Virginia Beach, enjoying golf and grandchildren who were the apple of his eye. In his heyday, he enjoyed technology and gadgets of all kinds and prided himself on keeping one step ahead of his grandchildren with the latest in cell phones, i-pods, x-box, and video games. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his brother and good friends and spent many fun vacations in St. Croix and traveling by barge in Europe. He was an adventurous soul and at age 84 he flew cross country to spend a week in San Diego with grandson Robert, seeing the sea lions in La Jolla. He travelled on to Montana to take in the mountains and bison with grandson, Joe. In later years, he returned to Virginia Beach and enjoyed dining all around town, including special Thursday lunches with his great granddaughters, Ryan and Carter, and Friday lunches in the Men's Grill at the Princess Anne.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Barnard Timms and Claire Elizabeth Vaughan Timms, and his brother, Andrew Jackson Timms. He is survived by his sons, Robert Vaughan Timms, Jr. (Kim) and David Stuart Timms (Barbie) and his grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Robert, Ashley (Cory), Joe (Alexis), Courtney, Maddie, Lauren, Lizzy (Jake), and Kathryn, as well as his precious great grandchildren, Ryan, Carter, and Bruce.
The family plans to honor Bob's life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad or to the Virginia Military Institute.
