Virginia Byler Obituary

Virginia Lorraine Parker Byler passed away peacefully on 21 January 2024 in Virginia Beach, VA, just a month shy of her 98th birthday.

Born in Norfolk to Waverly Parker and Mary Elizabeth McNamara, Virginia was the second youngest of five children. She had a charismatic personality even at a young age. She loved dancing, roller skating, bowling, beach bathing, gardening, and could entertain a room with her stories and jokes. She was the role model and matriarch for her large family. Caring for them was her life's work. She used her talents to cook large meals on Sundays and sewed lovely clothing for herself, her children and grandchildren. She was fiercely independent and a valiant champion for her family.

An avid reader of books and the Virginian Pilot/Ledger Star, she had a vast knowledge of world politics, current events, music, sports and all trivia. She had a glamorous side but was also resourceful, generous, clever, caring, strong-willed, and creative. She shared whatever she had with anyone in need.

Virginia is survived by her daughters Carolyn Parker Flowers, Judi Christine Flowers, Merry Lynn Holt, Kathryn Nell Byler, and her sons, Gary Clarence Byler and David Parker Byler; 17 grandchildren, and more than a dozen great and great-great grandchildren.

In respect for her wishes, there will be no funeral service but a private celebration of life will be held on her birthday. Memorial donations may be made to the Jennifer & Sarah Byler Foundation at 505 S. Independence Blvd. #102, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

There is nothing that anyone can say or do to ease your grief and your feeling of loss. But you know you will carry her within you and see her reflected in all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was my father's "sweetheart" for 35 years and he wanted to be with her always. Sadly, their ailments intervened but I know in his soul that he feels a deep grief over her passing. I hope that as time passes, your grief will ease and only the wonderful memories will remain.
