David Herbst Obituary

ROANOKE - David E. Herbst, 78, of Roanoke passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at his residence.

He was born on April 28, 1932, in Roanoke, Ill., to Benjamin and Blanche Snyder Herbst.

Surviving are one brother-in-law, Henry Bisco of Roanoke; two nephews, Howard (Nancy) Bisco and Hugh (Gladys) Bisco; five nieces, Joan (Brian) Bisco-Haney, Jan (Jim) Bisco-Werner, Mary Lou Taylor, Nancy (Gary) Lelm and Juanita (Ken) Laswell; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

An Air Force veteran, Dave served his country during the Korean War.

He was a member of Roanoke American Legion Post 463.

He graduated from the Caterpillar apprentice school in 1952 and was a tool designer at Caterpillar for 30 years, retiring from the Mossville plant.

An avid Cubs fan, after retirement he worked for the Cubs during spring training in Arizona for more than 20 years.

He also was a member of the Metamora chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and the Travelers Protection Association.

Family was important to Dave. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews and sharing his love of the outdoors with them. He loved hunting and fishing and also enjoyed bowling and golfing.

Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke. The Rev. Ken Sloan-Couch will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday before the services at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded and burial of ashes with military rites will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, in the Roanoke Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Peoria charter of Arthritis Foundation or to Roanoke American Legion Post 463.
