EAST PEORIA - Lloyd E. Johnson, 96, who moved to Peoria in 1937 and has lived in East Peoria since 1941, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, in Portland, Ore.

At Caterpillar, Mr. Johnson was listed as the inventor and a major or sole contributor on 18 U.S. Letters of Patent in diesel and gas turbine engine technology. In the late 1930s, Mr. Johnson helped bring Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurance plans to Caterpillar.

Mr. Johnson graduated at the top of his class of about 300 in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University in 1937.
Upon graduating from Iowa State, Mr. Johnson married Rosemae Johnson (Iowa State 1936), who died in 1984. In 1986, he married Verla Kelley of Washington, Ill., the widow of another Caterpillar research engineer, Bruce Kelley.
In 1989, they purchased a second home in Brookings, Ore., where they spent part of every year enjoying the ocean view, new friends and visits from their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We met Lloyd and Verla when we moved next door. Our daughter Anna was inspired by Lloyd, who had such a joyful spirit. Lloyd and Verla became dear friends to us, and the best neighbors you could ask for. They say God picks your neighbors and He did us well by these two.

I met Lloyd when I was Zoning Admin for Taz Co. and I was grateful for the opportunity that I had to get to know him and work with him during that time. I was delighted to hear that he became engaged to Mrs. Kelley!! As I knew her family from WaCoHi. I had no idea however he had so many accomplishments!!
Please know your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this time.

Thank you all. Rotary and Paparazzi were Dad's favorite outings for many years. We feel truly blessed to have had Dad with us for so much of our lives. And we had a splendid babysitter when we were kids. As I recall, my first sip of wine was part of a physics lesson (siphoning)provided by Carole's grandpa.
