Richard VanTine Obituary

PEORIA - Richard Kent VanTine of Four Seasons, Mo., formerly of Peoria, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, in the Intensive Care Unit of St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo. He was 62 years old.

Kent was born on June 7, 1945, in Peoria, Ill., to Richard L. and Marjorie E. VanTine. His father survives. He married his best friend, Barbara Reiners on June 20, 1987, in Lincoln, Ill. She was at his side at the time of his passing.

Mr. VanTine had two daughters of whom he was extremely proud, Austin, age 18, a freshman at the University of Texas, and Jordan, age 15, a sophomore at School of the Osage.

Kent was a 1963 graduate of Park Hill High School in Kansas City, Mo. He earned both his Bachelor of Science in business administration (1967) and his Master of Arts in geography (1969) from The University of Missouri-Columbia. Kent was a lifetime member of the University Alumni Association and an avid Missouri Tiger fan.

Mr. VanTine was a lieutenant in the United States Army and was leadership graduate of his Officer Candidate class in 1970.

Following his military service, Kent owned and operated VanTine's Feed Company restaurant with his father in Mason City, Ill., from 1974 until 1996. From 1996 until his death, he was an equity trader with VanTine Asset Management.

Among many other interests, Kent enjoyed bicycling, motorcycling, traveling and boating with his friends and family. He was an accomplished private pilot, having logged over 3,000 hours of flight time. Kent will be remembered for his quick wit and positive spirit by all of those who loved him.

There will be a celebration of the life of Kent VanTine at The Country Club Hotel, 301 Carol Road, Lake Ozark, Mo., from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, with a reception and service immediately following. Additionally, there will be a private service in memory of Mr. VanTine aboard a Celebration Cruises ship on the Lake of the Ozarks.

Local arrangements are being handled by Hedges Funeral Home in Osage Beach, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the "Kent VanTine Scholarship Fund" established at School of the Osage High School, P.O. Box 999, Lake Ozark, MO 65049.

Hi Barb,
My sympathy goes out to you. I have never met anyone who loved life as much a Kent. Our trips to the NASCAR races with Kent were my most memorable ones. He had some of the best Dr. jokes I ever heard. During some serious and private converstations with Kent I realalized how much he really loved you and the kids. Most people I know would give anything for that type of relationship. God bless you and the children. If he has anything to do about that in heaven I'm sure you won't have to worry.

Wow -- I was blown away by the news! To all of you I give my deepest sympathy; the world has lost a true renaissance man loved by all who met him. He tagged me with the nickname "Earth mother" and it stuck with me for a long time. I'm so glad my brother, Eric, and Marty Moeller were able to ride their bikes down there last year (?)to spend some time with you all. I'm also glad that Kent & I had reconnected lately thru the wonders of email. He sent me a picture of you girls. You are beautiful and your dad was extremely proud of you. Barb & Dick, I know there's a big hole in your lives. Please know that there are many, many people who are holding you all close to their hearts. With much love and many prayers, I remain your friend,

To the entire VanTine Family,

Kent gave me my first job working at VanTine’s when I was 15. He was such a great boss, always a smile and a kind word to say. I have compared all of my other bosses to him and none of them are as great as Kent. I always looked up to him and will always remember him with a smile. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

You don't know me. But for more than 30 years, we have told a wonderful story about Kent. In the 70's, I lived in Havana, my parents in Mt. Auburn. We would meet for dinner at your restaurant in Mason City.

One day while eating, my Mother commented on the beautiful yellow tomatoes on the buffet, not knowing that Kent overheard us. Just as we were about to leave, he tapped her on the shoulder and said "here you go, enjoy them." She has never forgotten it even until today at age 90.

Though you might enjoy hearing this. Please know that our sympathy and prayers are with you. What a fine man!!!

My condolences to Kent's entire family at this sad time. I will always remember Kent and his dad when they ran the restuarant in Mason City. Kent was always with a smile and a quick comment that brought a smile. He was really a great guy and he will be missed by all that new him.
