Joe Karscig Obituary

Joe Karscig died peacefully on Monday, August 27, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Mary Karscig for 45 years, and the loving father of three children, Christine Karscig, Brian Karscig and Amy Woods and a wonderful son-in-law, Dean Woods. He also leaves behind his most cherished granddaughters, Margaret Catherine (Maggie) Woods and Dorothy (Dottie) Woods and many loved brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Joseph.
Joe was the son of the late Philomena (Vetere) Karscig and Joseph Karscig of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Joe and his family moved to San Diego in January of 1985 and Joe instantly became a proud "almost native" of California.
Joe graduated from the University of Pittsburgh as a mechanical engineer and has owned his own business for the last twenty-six years. He was a man of great character and work ethic. Prior to owning his own business, he worked in management for United States Steel, Alcoa, E.G. Smith and Cyclops Steel, all headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Joe enjoyed traveling the world, jokes, playing cards and, ultimately, being with his family. He was a season ticket holder for the San Diego Chargers and one of their biggest fans. He supported many charitable and political organizations and was very proud of the communities of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. Nothing was more important to him than his family, his friends and his dogs. His life was a journey marked with deeds of kindness and cheer. He will be so missed by all that knew and loved him.
A Memorial Mass, a celebration of Joe's life will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012, at 3pm at St. Gabriel Catholic Church located at 13734 Twin Peaks Road, Poway, CA. Casual dress, as Joe did not enjoy wearing ties and sport coats.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to: Donate Life California, 3465 Camino del Rio South, Ste 410, San Diego, CA 92108, or please visit: www.donatelifecalifornia.org/JoeKarscig. Joe was an organ donor.

Dear Mary and family
John and I have such fond memories of Joe and extend out heartfelt sympathies to you and your family. We remember Joe's loyalty to his family and his obvious love of life. He was special person and a great friend to all of us who were living in Flanders at that time. He is missed. Love to you Mary.

Our deepest sympathies to Mary, Christine, Brian and Amy. Aside from being a good businessman and community philanthropist, Joe was first a kind, caring and good human being. He only needed to know if you were a good person and then he showed you the same kindness whether you were the janitor or the corporate CEO. Everyone felt welcome in his presence and he lit up any room he entered, alongside his wonderful wife, dear Mary. May Joe's memory be a comfort to your family. With love, Linda and Dale Tartakoff

I remember Mr. Karscig (as I called him) being soft spoken, but full of such wisdom. He helped me through skinned knees and even a dog bite! I know what my friend Amy is feeling, and I hope she and her family find peace in knowing that he's always going to be in their hearts.
