He welcomed you into his life with open arms and now the good lord has welcomed him back into his. God Bless you, Ralph and was indeed a real pleasure to have been part of your life. If the "Gnome" put a smile on your face it was worth it to see your infectious smile and warm approval so so dear to me. Rest in Peace Ralph and I share your grief with you, Becky and your family. Ralphs many accomplishments and contributions are well-known, but people may not know what a great supporter of Rice Athletics he and Becky have been, especially for the tennis teams. I fondly remember our annual trips to the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla, where Ralph and Becky would proudly display the Rice banner in front of their home and host our team meetings. Ralph never missed one of our matches in La Jolla. Even at 7 a.m., he could be spotted courtside, decked out in his Rice regalia! Because of his unwavering enthusiasm and astute eye for talent, I tried to interest him in a job as my Co-Head Coach, even offering him a 5 year no-cut clause, but when he learned the salary structure, he politely declined.

Ralph attended matches in Houston faithfully, even at times when his doctor probably wouldnt have liked it. He took a personal interest in the players and continued to advise and counsel them after graduation. My personal relationship with Ralph continued after my retirement from Rice, and I always enjoyed our phone conversations filled with his straight-forward commentary, laced with some old-school swearing, and never leaving a doubt about what he really thought.

When Ralph learned that my wife and I were headed to Europe for the first time, he sent me a letter containing several dining recommendations and enclosed the change left in his pocket from his last trip...about 4 euros in all...to supplement our travel budget. What a guy.

I regret that I am unable to return to Houston for Ralphs Memorial Service, but my Becky and I send our deepest condolences to his Becky (thats how we kept them straight) and the OConnor family. I will miss the friendship of this extraordinary man.
