Allen Vogel Obituary

Vogel, Allen R. "Tony"

Allen R. "Tony" Vogel, age 81, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1932 in Appleton, son of the late Reuben and Frances (Nadolny) Vogel. On August 23, 1958 he married Joyce Bunker at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah.

Tony graduated from St. Norbert College in 1960 and worked as compensation claims manager for Wausau Insurance for 29 years. Previously, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955, spending a year in Thule, Greenland, and recently had the privilege to participate in the October 21 Honor Flight trip.

Tony's love for his faith and family were on constant display throughout his life. As an active member at St. Anne's for 42 years, Tony served as a lector, commentator, and greeter, also providing passionate leadership for the St. Thomas More Men's Club, golf outings, turkey dinners, and enthusiastically chopping countless heads of cabbage for the Lenten fish fries. Tony's strong example of treating people with respect and dignity will live on through his children and grandchildren. Tony's laughter, sense of humor and passion for life will never be forgotten. Heaven just added a scratch golfer to its rolls.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce, Wausau; children, Francis Xavier Vogel, Milwaukee, Mary Margaret Vogel, Neenah, Peter Allen (fiancé Tawnya Rush) Vogel, Denver, Colorado, Martin Thomas (Tammy) Vogel, Delafield, Ben Anthony (Lesley) Vogel, Appleton and Ann Marguerite (Micah Digman) Vogel, Beaver Dam; 16 grandchildren, Paloma, Ava and Lola Vogel, Amanda, Mikaela and Hadley Skalmoski, Luke, Sam and Clare Vogel, Jack, Elijah, Preston, Eleanor, Audrey, Cale and Truman Vogel; brother, Bill (Marliese) Vogel, Plover; sister-in-law, Margaret "Peg" Bunker, Appleton; and brother-in-law, Eugene (Dolores) Bunker, DePere.

Besides his parents, Tony was preceded in death by brother, James Vogel and sisters, Marianne Peters and Janet Holverson.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Church of St. Anne, Wausau. A funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Alan Burkhardt will preside.

I remember meeting Mr. Vogel as a teenager and thinking how lucky you all were to have such a loving man with great character as your dad. I'm sure he was incredibly proud of each of you, his amazing children. I'm so sorry for your loss and hope that the blessings of his impact in your lives continue to give you strength in the days ahead.

Altho I didn't know Tony as well as I knew his sons, Ben & Marty, he had to be an unbelievable dad to raise such wonderful young men. May your many memories of happier times help all of you through this difficult time.

I had the privilege of knowing Tony through St. Anne's. He was also a high school classmate of my father at St. Mary's in Menasha, where I also attended. We marveled at that "small world" coincidence when we worked together to get the St. Anne's golf outing successfully off the ground as a fundraiser for the church addition. I loved his optimistic view of life, witty sense of humor, and competitiveness. Heaven wins this time. My condolences to Tony's family.
