Oh my Gosh! Today I went through an old memory box & found my POW bracelet, that I wore during the war. Capt. Fredric Flom, 8-8-66.
I'm so glad he made it home & was able to experience his life's journey back here in the US with loved ones.
We have been at the "Chain," since the mid 1950's. I sure wish I had known Fred & his family. If there are any surviving family members still in the Waupaca area, I'd love to meet you and here more about Captain Fred.
I'm truely sorry for your loss. Peace be with you!

I wore his POW bracelet when I was a young teenager for several years. Lovely to put a face to the name. Sorry that he's gone. :(

My late husband wore a bracelet inscribed CAPT. FREDRIC FLOM
8-8-66 from the time of his capture until the end of the war. I recently found it. If the family would like to have it, I can send it to them.

I never had the pleasure of knowing Fred Flom but as a teenager I wore his POW bracelet daily and prayed for his safe return. I just recently had it out wondering if he ever made it home. My husband started helping me search and just found this information today February 3, 2024. It was wonderful to learn so much about him and see photos so that I have a face with his name now. I would be happy to send the family my bracelet if they would like to have it.

My brother guy and I worked as teenagers at north shore country club. We were walking though the lobby when we saw Fred's little girl standing on the deck between the club house and the pool. We walked over because she was looking into the sky. When she saw us the said her dad told her to be on the deck at noon for a surprise. He heard something for just a second, when two fighter jets came over the club house. They were so low you could count the rivets. The jets desended to the point they barely cleared the water of lake winnebago. 5 seconds later thay were out of sight. I remember it like it was 5 minutes ago. What a sight. I had a chance to drive his Pantera while parking cars at one of the party's at north shore.

I never had the honor of meeting Fred, but I wore his name around my wrist on a P.O.W. bracelet for years. Through those years, he was in my thoughts and prayers on a daily basis. Over the years, I've often thought about him, knowing he safely returned and hoped he had a wonderful life upon his return. Recently I ran across that P.O.W. bracelet, and I decided to try to look him up. I was saddened to learn of his passing but felt much comfort knowing he did indeed live a wonderful life. I only wish I had had the pleasure to have met him. Blessings to his family and friends and RIP Fred.

I met Fred in 1973 in Houston, Texas when he was sent there to check out in the F-102. We became friends immediately, since I also flew the F-105 in Thailand, arriving there 3 months after Fred was shot down. We went together to a fighter pilots reunion, in Chicago, and a former POW friend of Fred´s told me of his first meeting with Fred. Fred had been tortured for many days by the North Vietnamese and was just about dead. They threw Fred into the cell with this other airman (who I believe was a Navy pilot) and he told me Fred could not even lift his head. He would hold Fred´s head up and spoon feed him back to recovery. Fred looked at me and said "if not for him, I would not be here today ". Fred suffered from his injuries as a POW, but he did not talk about them. He was a true American Hero and a great person. Our condolences to Kay and the family!!! He is in a better place now!!

Bill grew up with Fred on Park Avenue and he was in the crowd at The Airport to meet Fred upon his return to the USA. It is with a heavy heart that we say "Goodbye, Fred. Until we meet again, May you now rest in the arms of our loving Creator." Sincere prayers for healing hearts for Kay and the entire family of Dear Fred

Condolences to the family. I was 6 years old when my family attended his POW welcome home. I have remembered his name my entire life and remember him meeting his son, who was my age, for the first time. Something made me search for him today and I saw that he passed just a week ago. Rest in Peace.

I may have only met him a couple of times in my life but read about his sports history at Lawrence and we was a POW about the time I was in the AF. I can not imagine how tough it was to be held captive for so long. I think Chuck McKee was his BIL who was a great athlete in Appleton at the same time as Rocky Bleier. It was always debated who was the best athlete at that time as both were great. RIP

Thank you for your service to our nation Fred. I was 10 years old when we celebrated your return home. My parents took us to the celebration and I will always remember the "Welcome Home Fred Flom: sign painted in red, white and blue on the infamous Lawrence University Drew St. wall!! In my memory, that greeting will remain. My dad cried and told us how proud we should all be to have an American soldier among us in our community. My friends and I wore silver POW bracelets with your name etched upon them.
I wish I could have known you....RIP, Fred Flom.
