KIllian Kvalvik Obituary
Killian James Kvalvik, age 21, passed away at his home in Appleton on June 15, 2017. Killian was born September 12, 1995 in Neenah, Wisconsin to Prerna Kvalvik and James Kvalvik. He attended Appleton area schools where he excelled academically, most notably in mathematics.
While exceedingly intelligent, Killian was a humble young man. His beautiful smile, deep brown eyes and endearing laugh will be missed by everyone who loved him.
As a high school student, Killian took additional math classes at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley and Lawrence University. Following his 2012 graduation from Appleton North High School, he furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in mathematics in December 2015. Killian also possessed a strong interest in linguistics, including the study of Mandarin and Russian.
Killian furthered his passion for social justice while living and working in Madison. He spent countless hours volunteering for organizations and issues he believed in, including increasing the minimum wage, free college education for everyone, universal health care and the Black Lives Matter movement. The essence of Killian's complex personality was his ability to possess a tremendously gentle spirit while being a fierce advocate for people who are oppressed, to be soft-spoken while audacious as a debater. While he loved to learn, Killian also loved to teach. He tutored many students who benefited from his knowledge, his patience and his kindness.
Killian is survived by his extraordinarily devoted mother, Prerna, and his sister, Anastasia (Ana), whom he adored and admired. He is further survived by his maternal grandmother, Kalpana Kaul, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The family would like to thank the teachers and mentors who nurtured Killian's academic gifts.
A memorial service for Killian will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at FOX VALLEY UNIVERSALIST UNITARIAN FELLOWSHIP, 2600 E Philip Lane, Appleton, with the Rev. Leah Hart-Landsberg officiating. There will be a visitation at the Fellowship on Thursday, June 22 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Refreshments will be served following the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Killian's name. Contributions can be made to the fund at the Old National Bank, W3160 County Road KK, Appleton WI 54915.

The world stopped when I hear the news that we had lost our dear precious Killian. He was a wonderful man with a beautiful heart and soul. He will always hold a special place in my heart forever.

We remember when Killian was having his 3rd birthday party. We had bought him a stuffed dinosaur. After he opened it, he began explaining to us that the dinosaur was a something something dinosaur, and most people would think it was a triceratops. He went on to explain that this is a common mistake but he just knew by counting the triangles that ran down its back.
I was stunned and knew he was so special, so kind and thoughtful even as a preschool boy who should be trying to count to 3, but instead was learning the nuances of dinosaur anatomy :).
The world has experienced a great loss with the lost of this man/boy who had a beautiful soul and mind.

I would like to say I mentored Killian in Coming of Age but in truth, I am quite sure I learned more from him. What I remember most was that for as great as his intellect was, and it was incredible, it truly was matched by the depth of his compassion and commitment to social justice. Also, his deep, deep love for his family was something I remember fondly. Holding you in love and light.

Its difficult to express the shock and grief on hearing of the loss of someone as gentle and loving as Killian. His memory will shine on as a bright spark in all our lives, especially, yours, Rosiedidi and Ana. We were lucky to meet him and spend some time with him last year. Killian was an outstanding human being, and I am so fortunate to have known him. I met Killian in a mathematics class at UW-Madison--Abstract Algebra, which turned out to be one of his favorite subjects! My first impression of Killian's extraordinary mind was his ability to craft a single question that encapsulated all of the unspoken confusion shared by the rest of the class. His contributions were enlightening yet thought-provoking in themselves. From then on I knew Killian would bring big ideas into any conversation I was lucky enough to share with this exceptional person.
So passionate, so eloquent, yet so level-headed, friendly, and humble; anybody who spoke with Killian for even a few minutes left with a feeling that this person was "on to something" both intellectually and spiritually. His vibrantly empathic spirit was ignited by his persistent advocacy and activism for all victims of oppression and injustice, and this positively uplifting energy was invariably felt by his peers and companions. As a cherished friend, Killian was always encouraging and supportive. I will forever be shaped by the profound impact that he has had on my life. To have known Killian, even for such a short time, is a precious gift.

I never knew Killian, but I read about his passing on Facebook, as we have mutual friends. He graduated from high school in Appleton the same year that I did, while I sadly never had the pleasure of meeting him. According to what you wrote about Killian, it sounds like we had a lot in common. I am so very sorry to hear about your loss - there are no words to truly express my condolences.
