Marie Gartman Obituary

Marie D. Gartman

Oshkosh - Marie D. Gartman, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018, at Eden Meadows, at the age of 91. Born December 22, 1926 in Oshkosh to parents Emil and Margaret (Schaick) Sohm, she was just shy of her 92nd birthday. Marie was the youngest of 6 children.

Marie attended Oshkosh Public Schools and graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1944. She attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and received her Bachelor of Science degree and Master's degree in Teaching.

Marie married Callin Gartman on April 2, 1946, who was a partner in Gartman Jewelry Store. They made their home on Shangri La Point Rd., Lake Butte des Morts, and enjoyed many good times with family, friends, and neighbors at the Lake. Cal preceded her in death on December 9, 1973.

Marie taught mathematics in Winneconne for 26 years, retiring in January of 1990. She was instrumental in augmenting an accelerated math group, providing Algebra in the 8th grade.

Golf was her passion. She was an avid golfer and earned many trophies and awards. You could find her on the course, well into her 80's. She organized the Far Vu Ladies Golf League, acting as charter president. Marie also was the president of the Utica Ladies Golf League. As a member of Ridgeway Country Club, she served on the Board of Directors, and was the women's representative for the Northeastern Golf Association.

Marie was a member of the Oshkosh Power Boat Club, Wisconsin Education Association, National Education Association, Retired Winnebago Educators Association, Wisconsin Teachers Association, Bethel Shrine, Eastern Star, and Emmanuel UCC women's guild.

In addition to golf, Marie loved to travel, enjoyed reading, going to the YMCA, and looked forward to ringing the bells for the Salvation Army, during the Christmas season, at Festival Foods. She was very active until health issues slowed her down, after she turned 90.

She is survived by one sister Eleanor Paulmann of Sheboygan, nieces: Anne Koenig, Judy Brauer, Nancy Hernandez, and Sondra Shelton, nephews: James Paulmann and Steven Sohm.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Callin, a sister Irene Bechaud, brothers, Harvey, Emil, and Hubert Sohm, and long-time friend Bernard Samuels.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 5th, at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 1306 Michigan St, at 11am with Rev. Andi Wolff officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10am until the time of services. Burial will be at Lake View Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Marie and Callin Gartman Scholarship Fund.

Anne and Dave Koenig would like to thank the staff at Gabriel's Villa, Eden Meadows and Aurora Hospice for their assistance, and for the care and compassion that Marie received.

Wonderful memories of Marie while I was growing up on Shangri La Point. Cal and Marie would give me a birthday present and send me home to show my parents.. a trumpet. a drum, a pop gun! When Cal passed we would go golfing, it was good for both of us, she will be missed.
