Van Ray Campbell, 61, of Shelley, passed away Aug. 1, 2010, in Victor, Idaho.
He was born Feb. 27, 1949, at Eaton Maternity Home in Shelley, Idaho, to David O'dell and Leah Campbell. He attended schools in Shelley all his life and graduated from Shelley High School. He was active in sports and music and was selected as seminary president his senior year. After high school, he attended Ricks College. He was self-employed for most of his adult life. For many years, he operated a shelter home on South Milton in Shelley.
He was involved with many church, school and community activities and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors. Reading about leaders and history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serving within the church was his second favorite activity. His first love was the fun times and activities he had with his family, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Campbell; mother of his children, Beth Hoggan; children, Tia (Darren) Smith, Christy (Benjamin) Tomlinson, Brady (Brooke) Campbell, Cody (Jayla) Campbell, Leora (Scott) Sandford, Leah (Christapher) Jarrell and Van Junior Campbell; stepchildren, Julian (Natlie) Milano and Jonathan (LeAnnia) Milano; 27 very special grandchildren; and siblings, Gene Peterson, Bonnita Romrell, Rose Hansen, Lester Campbell, Bruce Campbell and Robert Campbell. His home was open to many, including Antanio, David and Daniel Gonzalez, whom he considered his children.
He was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Morgan and Logan Smith; parents, David O'dell and Leah; and siblings, Wendell, David, Perry, and twins, Dorothy and Doris Campbell.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at the Shelley LDS South Stake Center, 675 S. Milton Ave., with Bishop Jeffery Cox conducting. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Nalder Funeral Home, 110 W. Oak St. in Shelley, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. Friday at the church. We have admired Van over the years for his many admirable qualities. He has been a real-time example of the Master’s words, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40). Although we know we will see him again we will nonetheless miss his presence for many reasons. He leaves us his example and an influence that will not be lost. We would all be better to follow his righteous ways.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of a very dear friend to our family. Van was such a good person. He helped many young men financially while serving missions for the Lord....including members of our family - something we will never forget! He was so giving of his time and finances to others...always thinking of others and serving the Lord. He will be missed. May your family find comfort and peace during this difficult time of loss and know that he is still very close and near to you...and always will be!
