Marlene Loeffler Obituary

Marlene Loeffler

December 31, 1934 - March 4, 2026

GREENFIELD CENTER - Marlene Adeline (Washburn) Loeffler, 91, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed peacefully on March 4, 2026 in York, Pa. where she had resided since October of last year. She previously lived in Greenfield Center. She was born December 31, 1934 in Corinth, N.Y., the daughter of John Henry Washburn and Alice Mae (Ormsby) Washburn.

Marlene graduated from Corinth High School in 1952 where she was on the cheerleading squad.

She spent 71 years of marriage to Hubert A. Loeffler, Sr. who was the love of her life. They met at a square dance in Stoney Creek, N.Y. They continued dancing many years into their marriage when they celebrated her birthday each New Year's Eve. Marlene spent her early work life at The Grand Union grocery store as a cashier. Once her children were in school, she went to work for The Saratoga Springs School System starting out in the elementary and junior high cafeteria and then moved to the high school as the attendance clerk. She retired after 38 years of service.

Marlene was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church since her marriage in 1954. She served on committees, volunteered in the office, was an organizer for the church nursery and was adult advisor for the youth group. In her younger years, she was an avid bowler and bowled on the church bowling league. She was a Cub Scout den mother for a number of years. During later years, she was a member of The Red Hat Society.

Her interests were many. Recently, she enjoyed watching baseball. In 1953 she belonged to a woman's softball team called The Red Caps. She passed the time working word puzzles and watching the Game Show Network and westerns on TV. She was an animal lover of all kinds, especially Boston Terriers of which she had three over the years. Marlene and her husband loved the decades they spent camping with family and friends at Lake Eaton in the Adirondacks.

Marlene was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Loeffler, Sr.; her grandson, Hubert Loeffler III; and six siblings. Survivors include a son, Hubert Loeffler, Jr. of Greenfield Center; daughter, Melia Loeffler Malachowski (John) of Stewartstown, Pa.; grandsons, John M. Malachowski (Sarah) of York, Pa. and Jeremiah M. Loeffler of Saratoga Springs; great-grandchildren, John David Malachowski and Elaina Malachowski of York, Pa.; two loving sisters-in-law, Caroline Patterson of Saratoga Springs and Barbara Loeffler of Ghent, N.Y.; along with many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 149 Lake Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 with a funeral service being celebrated at 1 p.m.

Burial will be held in the spring 2026 at Greenfield Cemetery, Wilton Rd., Greenfield Center, N.Y.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 149 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Dear Melia and Hubert, I am sorry for the passing of mom but you know she is with the angels. My good fortune was to meet her every working morning at the shs attendance office on my way to teach social studies in the early 70s. She started my day with a joke or some funny incident with the excuses students made for being late. Melia as I recall you were one of my students at the time and you reminded me of her so much with you smile and interest in the class. Hubert she was so proud of you and would speak of you often over our six years together. Mom was a part of my going away party to the central administration in 1975 at a party in Greenfield and shared some of her great jokes about me. My memory's are strong as to the impact you mom had on so many students, faculty, parents and particularly myself. Mom is resting now after a full and valued life. My pray is with you and the family. Memories of Marlene & Hugh flood. So many from days of bowling together; her support during a flirtation; and just chats in church. Two of the best people I had the privilege to know and now they are reunited. My deepest sympathy & prayers to Hugh, Jr & Melia and the family.
