Michael Douros Obituary
Michael W. Douros
January 28, 1974 - February 18, 2025
POTTERSVILLE - It is with many broken hearts that we announce the passing of Michael "Big Mike" Douros, of Pottersville, N.Y. The Nickname was given to him not because of his stature, but rather who he was as a person: Big Personality, Big Heart, Big Love and a Big Smile.
Michael was born on January 28, 1974, to parents, George W. and Louise (Legreca) Douros.
Michael was an amazing friend to countless people. Anyone in his presence would be sure to hear funny stories, share his antics and would leave with memories of a lot of laughter, framed with bear hugs and love from Michael.
Always wanting friends to feel comfortable, Michael was a born entertainer and comedian.
Michael grew up in Spotswood, N.J., where he forged friendships that lasted until his passing. After his father, George survived 9/11, the family moved to Blythewood Island on Loon Lake, where their vacation home turned into their forever home. Michael made the Adirondacks his permanent residence, as it was yet another place he forged friendships that lasted a lifetime. He was fully accepted from a "flatlander" to a true, blue Adirondacker.
Possibly surprising to some, Michael was musically talented. He once agreed to a starring role as King Potiphar in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast in the local Community Theater. His vocal talent was highlighted and awed by many. Michael missed his calling as a natural born comedian, everything he did was in a Big Way, hence "Big Mike."
Michael deeply cherished his friendships, making new and holding on to old wherever he went. Despite the Cliché, Big Mike truly lit up any room he entered. Everyone there knew they were in for entertainment and laughter (and a good squeeze), whether Michael was working or not, friends seemed to gravitate towards him.
Michael continued working and playing, enjoying life's blessings despite his own trials. Michael would facetime, call, and message his friends sharing funny stories even when he was in pain from hospital beds. He never let on to anyone. "Is everyone Happy" would be his motto. All he cared about was bringing laughter to all.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, George (2017) and Louise (2010); and his best friend, a perfect buddy-boy Labrador retriever named Buddy.
He is survived by beloved sister, Danielle Douros Hawk; his niece, Juliette Douros Hawk; several aunts and uncles, cousins; his "brother-like" best friends, Jason Monroe and Stephen Monroe; and dear to him, their sister, Renee Monroe. He is remembered lovingly by his girlfriend, Julie Baker; and his former spouse, Tammy Rivers. He had a special place in his heart for his step-children, Brittany and Devin; his "adopted" family, Jason, Tammy, Jenna, Kyle, and Conner Monroe. He leaves behind love for a special little boy, Walker Monroe whom Michael adored. There are so many friends to mention as you know who you are that were in Michael's life, enjoying his company. It speaks to Michael's character that there are so many of you.
Michael would ask that you all remember him with the fondest of memories, put a smile on your face, a bounce in your stride, with laughter and joy of memories in your heart.
In lieu of flowers, a "Go Fund Me" page has been set up to cover expenses.
Friends may call on him at Barton-McDermott Funeral Home, Inc. 9 Pine St, Chestertown, N.Y. 12817 on Saturday, March 8th from 12 to 3 p.m.
A Celebration of Life for "Big Mike" will be held at a date to be determined.
