Albert Dickson Obituary

Albert Edward Dickson

Formerly of Pleasant Valley - Albert Edward Dickson, 91, formerly of Pleasant Valley, NY, passed away on July 11th, 2016 at Brookdale Cary, his loving home for four years, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Albert was born on February 25th, 1925, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Nathaniel and Anna McGovern Dickson of County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. At age two, the family moved to Brooklyn, New York. He attended St. Paul's Elementary School and St. Augustine's High School. In June of 1943, he applied for early induction into the U.S. Army where he served as a Staff Sergeant in Field Artillery, fighting bravely overseas in the Philippines during World War II until March of 1946. Under the GI Bill, he attended Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, graduating in 1950 with a BA in mechanical engineering. He became a Licensed Professional Engineer in 1957 and received his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1965. He joined the NY State Department of Public Works in 1950 which later became the NY State Department of Transportation. He proudly served the DOT for thirty nine years, retiring in 1989 as the Regional director of Region 8 in Poughkeepsie, NY.

In September, 1971, Al married Veronica ( Ronnie) McHugh in St. Patrick's Cathedral, NY, NY. Upon his marriage, having been an only child, he inherited Ronnie's big family of sisters and brothers-in-law as well as nineteen nieces and nephews who cherished him. Al and Ronnie raised their family in Pleasant Valley, NY, eventually moving to North Carolina in 2005 to be closer to their daughter Veronica and her family.

Albert is survived by Ronnie Dickson of Morrisville, NC, his loving wife of forty-four years; daughter Veronica Dziminski of Cary, NC, her husband Mark and their three children Cameron, Mason and Maddie; son Albert Dickson of San Antonio, Texas, his wife April and their four children Abigail, Isaiah, Zora and Soren and many nieces and nephews. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle and his family brought such joy to his life. Albert will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his faith, and his ready smile. Go in peace Al. Well done.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 15th, 2016, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary, NC. Visitation will take place one hour prior. Interment will follow the mass at the church columbarium. This will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer's Association of North Carolina (www.alznc.org) or Transitions Hospice (www.transitionslifecare.org). The family would also to like express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff of Brookdale Cary who provided Al with such loving care over the last four years. I work with Albert N. Dickson in San Antonio and have for more than 4 years. I am so very sad and sorry to hear of your family's loss, Albert. You know, I have endured the passing of both my beloved mother and father, and my youngest brother and his wife, so I know little can be said or done to help ease you all through this sad time. But I do pray for you, Albert, and your family, that God will bless you with comfort during this time. Please know you are lifted up in my daily prayers, that the Great Spirit of us all, our Creator and Master of All Life, is with you, and your beloved father. Take good care.

My deepest sympathy.
I have known Al since the 1970's when he oversaw the New York City office of NYSDOT. A few years after I moved to Region 8 from Region 10 Al became Regional Director in Region 8. He was a wonderful man and a great Regional Director.
I remember his stories of visiting relatives in Northern Ireland during The Troubles and how he was related to Tom Carvel. My favorite story was how during a meeting with local officials about the terrible traffic congestion at the Red Oaks Mill intersection he slowly realized (being very new to the area) that they were talking about an intersection he drove through every day on the way to work and that it never occurred to him that there was any congestion there (after all he was from Long Island and New York City). He said it proved to him that all problems were relative.
Al will be greatly missed. He was an exemplary engineer and person.
