C. Meyer Obituary

C. William (Bill) Meyer, Jr.

Poughkeepsie - C. William (Bill) Meyer was born in Montclair, NJ on March 19, 1931; was raised in Verona, NJ; spending summers at North Sea Beach, Southampton, NY. He graduated from Verona High School in 1949 and from the University of Vermont in 1953 with a BS degree in Agricultural Economics and an ROTC commission in the US Army. He met his future wife, Patricia Rule, from Arlington, MA at UVM. Before marrying Pat, he served in the US Army, mostly in Munich, Germany, from 1954 to 1955.

Bill and Pat were married in 1956. They moved to Poughkeepsie, NY in 1963 where Pat transformed a house into a "home." Here they raised their 4 children: Christian (3rd), Eric, Jonathan, and Gretchen, plus pet dogs. Pat and Bill lived and taught the significance of traditional family values.

In 1964, Bill began his career being self-employed as a real estate broker. In 1975, he added appraising real estate to his business. Bill was a founder and 1st president of the Mid-Hudson Multiple Listing Service.

Bill has always been an action-oriented person, enjoying and participating in competitive sports, especially with his children and grandchildren. From childhood, Bill loved boats; graduating from a row boat, to an outboard, to an inboard boat with a cabin. Two trips through NYC Harbor, Long Island Sound, and back through the Atlantic Ocean were definite highlights.

Bill's outdoor interests shifted to the quiet woods and mountains. The family camped at Schroon Lake and vacationed at Camp of the Woods in Speculator, NY for over 40 years. His son, Jonathan, introduced him to climbing mountains in the Adirondacks. Bill climbed the "100 highest Mountains" in New England, forty-six 4000' mountains in the Adirondacks, the 3500' mountains in the Catskills; a portion of the John Muir Trail in CA ending on Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in California and the contiguous US states at 14,505' with his daughter, Gretchen and Scott; as well as hiking the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch.

In Nov 1972, Bill attended the 1st Tres Dias, an interdenominational three day Christian renewal retreat. This deepened Bill's faith in Jesus which inspired his faith until his death. Regular church attendance, group bible studies, and morning devotions enhanced Bill and Pat's 62 years of marriage and strengthened Bill's faith journey.

Bill had a minor stroke in May 2012, which slowed him down physically, but his mind remained acute. He continued to do a limited number of residential appraisals through age 84. On Sept. 18, 2018 Bill suffered two major strokes. Despite efforts to recover, he passed on Sept. 25, 2018. He was surrounded with the love and support of his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Pat, his four children, Chris, Eric, Jonathan and Gretchen, their spouses, Mary Beth, Lois, Christina and Scott, respectively, and nine grandchildren: Alexander, Allison, Sarah, Benjamin, Rebekah, Ryan, Luke, Cameron and Andrew Jacob "AJ;" one great grandchild, Caden Flora; and his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Alec Marshall, and their three children, Bruce, Scott and Nancy.

Bill would like to be remembered for having lived a life of integrity in business and all relationships; he saw and treated each person as a valuable child of God and he wished to leave a positive, God honoring legacy for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Psalm 119: 1-4 (Message Translation)

You're blessed when you stay on course; Walking steadily when you follow His directions; Doing your best to find him. That's right - you don't go off on your own; You walk straight along the road He set. You, God, prescribed the right way to live; Now you expect us to live it!

My dad was a man of integrity and put his love for God and his family above all else. He taught each of us four children how to work hard, how to be compassionate and generous, and how to treat others the way we want to be treated. He told us to reach for our dreams - nothing is impossible! He loved my mom dearly and encouraged us to appreciate and value her as our mother and his wife. We miss you Dad. Life will never be the same without you. I love you, Dad. Gretchen
