Gladys Rosa Viera

Beacon - Gladys Rosa Viera, a 60 year resident of Beacon and formerly of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, entered into rest on February 3, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 78 years old.

Gladys was born on October 13, 1942 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. The daughter of the late Roberto Mendez and Francisca (Panchi) Machuca. On October 21, 1961 in Beacon, she married the love of her life, Santos Viera Ramos who survives at home.

Gladys attended the University of Puerto Rico. She had several jobs before her retirement in 1988. She was a Case Manager for the Department of Mental Health, a former corrections officer, which she was one of the first female officers, and LPN at Matteawan State Hospital and employee of the Beacon City School District.

Gladys was a member of the Pentecostal Assembly of God. Gladys was an original member of the Hispanic Club in Beacon and started the Missionettes Club at the Pentecostal Assembly of God and volunteered for many causes in the City of Beacon. She loved to knit, sew, cook and enjoyed her cruises and casinos.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Erick Viera (Carmen) of Miami, Fl, Bethzaida "Betsy" Catalano (Danny) of Beacon, Marilyn "Nani" Ricottilli (Greg) of Beacon and Wendy Viera Pitt (Nathan) of Cornwall; her grandchildren, Erika, Christina, Gregory and Dominic Ricottilli, Dylan and Priscilla Pitt, Joshua and Nina Catalano; her great grandchildren, Jayden, Amani, Jesanna, Jacob, Joseph, Mariana, Olivia and Sophia; her siblings, Luis Mendez, Elba Castro, Gabriel Soto, Edwin Soto and Wilfredo Soto; her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, William Machuca, Juan and Jorge Mendez; her niece, Melissa Santos and her husband, Darrin.

Family and friends will gather on Thursday, February 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street, Beacon. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 12. Burial will follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill.
