John L. "Jack" McCarney, Jr.
Hopewell Junction - John L. "Jack" McCarney, Jr. , 88, of Hopewell Junction, NY passed away on July 21 , 2021 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was born on March 25, 1933 in York, PA, the son of John L. McCarney, Sr. and Mary (Jacobs) McCarney. His parents have preceded him in death.
Jack married Jackie Luzzi on November 9, 1996.
Jack grew up in Rhinebeck, NY. He attended Rhinebeck HS where he excelled in basketball and baseball.
After high school, Jack enlisted in the Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Randolph (CV-15) during the Korean War. After returning from active duty, he had various jobs. One at the phone company in Hopewell Junction, lead to a long and successful career at IBM in East Fishkill. He received awards for his work on CAD. He was a member of IBM Quarter Century Club. He was a Sr. Engineering Manager, in the Facilities Engineering Department when he retired after 38 years of service in 2002.
In addition to his IBM career, he taught Tae Kwon Do at Dutchess Community College and Vassar College for many years. He achieved all Second Degree Black Belt. He was fortunate to learn Tae Kwon Do from Duk-Sung, President, World Tae Kwon Do Association.
In retirement, he and Jackie made a trip to Switzerland, where their son Paul was living. He enjoyed going to Long Dock in Beacon and Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie. He delivered "meals on wheels " with Jackie for a number of years. He enjoyed watching his son Paul play soccer and grandsons play baseball, basketball and soccer. He enjoyed cooking and our holiday dinners were delicious and prepared with much love. His potato salad is legendary. Family meant everything to him and he was there to help whenever needed.
Jack is survived by his loving wife Jackie; his daughter Lisa and her husband Randy Prentiss, Staatsburg, NY; son Phillip Grandinetti, Poughkeepsie, NY; son Paul McCarney and partner Lea Dubois, St. Augustine, FL; stepdaughter Stephanie Luzzi and her partner Dan Kleiner; Brooklyn, NY; stepson John Luzzi, Jr. and his husband Ricky, Arlington, TX. Grandchildren are Phillip Grandinetti, Poughkeepsie, NY; Wydea Merchant and her husband Scott, Charlotte, NC; Benjamin Prentiss, Brooklyn, NY; Samuel Prentiss, Staatsburg, NY; Isaac McCarney Dubois, St. Augustine, FL ; and great-grandchild Phillip Grandinetti, Poughkeepsie, NY. His sister, Nancy McCarney, Rhinebeck, NY, brother Larry McCarney and wife, Jeanette, Little River, SC. sister-in-law Diane and husband Tony Candullo, South Salem, NY; sister-in-law Denise Artuso, Yonkers, NY; brother-in-law Robert Artuso and wife Kathy, Thornwood, NY. He is also survived by a niece and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and his Aunt Leona Hubley, York, PA.
Jack loved animals big and small. He got a lot of pleasure in watching the wildlife that came through his Hopewell Junction property. Deer, turkeys, birds and even a black bear. He'll be missed by his cats Beverly and Violet.
Jack was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He'll forever be in our hearts.
Visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533, from 2 to 4pm. Military Honors at the end of the service.
