Joseph T. Sonntag

Wappingers Falls - Joseph T. Sonntag, 83, an area resident for 48 years and formerly of Allentown, PA, died peacefully on August 16, 2016 at his home.

Born in Carbondale, PA on March 18, 1933, he was the son of Frederick and Mary Walker Sonntag. Joseph proudly served our country in the US Navy and then went on to graduate from Temple University in Philadelphia. He was employed as a computer analyst with IBM in East Fishkill for many years, and then worked as a teachers' assistant in special education for 16 years for the Wappingers Central School District at Gayhead and Myers Corners Elementary Schools, and Roy C. Ketcham High School.

Joseph was a parishioner of St. Columba Church where he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister, and sang in the choir. He was also a member of St. Mary's Council #4065, Knights of Columbus. He began his acting hobby in high school, and his love of theater continued with the Allentown Players, St. Mary's Players and County Players. He enjoyed golfing, was a math whiz, and was a history buff with expertise on the Civil War.

On June 18, 1960 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Carbondale, Joseph married Mary Katherine Nally who predeceased him on November 22, 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Karin Sonntag and her fiancé James Walsh of Wappingers Falls; his son, Joseph Sonntag of Wappingers Falls; and his grandsons, Joseph Massarone and Connor Rogan.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 10:30am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
