Maureen Tanner Obituary

Maureen Ann (Thorpe) Tanner

Staatsburg - Maureen Ann "Reenie" (Thorpe) Tanner, age 67, passed away at her home on Sunday, January 10th, 2021 after a short illness. She was a graduate of FDR High School in 1971 and received her RN degree from Stamford Hospital School of Nursing in Stamford, Connecticut. It was in high school that she met her best friend and husband, Rich Tanner. Together, they built a life to be envious of by all, starting with the home they built and completing with the surrounding gardens that would that serve as her source of solemnity, reflection, and fulfillment. She could spend hours working in the dirt and always barefoot! She would emerge with dirt on her hands and a large smile on her face!

She and Rich are survived by their two children, Neal Tanner and Lindsay (Tanner) Brennan, as well as one grandson, Max, to whom she was "Mimi". Reenie was proud of the large family she had with her grandson and many nieces and nephews with each of them having their own special memories of fun times. She was known for her generous nature, her easy laugh, and her quick way to solve a problem for someone.

Reenie's work as an RN was the biggest source of pride for her, spanning 50 years. There are many in this area having the privilege of being a patient of hers or working by her side. She took the Nurses' pledge seriously and always put others above herself. She worked as a Nursing Supervisor at Vassar Brother's Hospital, often on the evening shift, where she built her career and reputation as "one of the best" and finishing her career at Lutheran Care Center.

In addition to her children and husband, she is survived by her mother, Jean Thorpe, of Staatsburg, her three younger brothers: Russell (Susan) of Henderson NV, Gerry (Carla) of Staatsburg, and Jeffrey (Kim) of Maine, and her youngest sibling, Sally Colletti (Joe) of Vestal, New York; as well as sister-in-law, Jackie Thorpe. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Mary Tanner, of Staatsburg; sister-in-law, Lynn Greaney, of Saugerties, and brother-in-law, Jim Tanner (Shelly) of Pittsburgh, PA.

She is predeceased by her father, Richard Thorpe Sr.; oldest sister, Kathleen (Thorpe) Tompkins, and younger brother, Richard Thorpe Jr., as well as her father-in-law, Alan Tanner.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A period of memorial visitation will take place from 11 AM to 1PM, Sunday, January 24th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

A memorial service will follow at 1 PM.

Masks will be required and proper COVID precautions will be observed. Be prepared for longer than average wait times at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mental Health America of Dutchess County, 253 Mansion Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. (www.mhadutchess.org)

Special "prayers" are meant for "special people", and Reenie Tanner was the true angel of Nursing at Lutheran Care Center....She taught me everything that I know about Dementia with my Mom Muriel M..Tompkins who was a patient there. Her knowledge and guidance gave me the "strength" and "courage" to deal with Dementia...May God's peace and presence always be with my Mom, and Reenie, and her family. Heaven surely has an "Angel of a Nurse" . She was "one in a million" person"....Patty A. (Tompkns) Beighley and husband Thomas H. Beighley

To know Reenie was to love her. She was a tremendous help to me when my mom was a long-term patient at Lutheran Care Center from 11/12/2012 to 9/25/2014. Reenie was truly a blessed nurse with the patience of Job. She has truly earned her wings in Heaven. Patty A. (Tompkins) Beighley and husband, Tommy H. Beighley

I knew Maureen for over 30 year. I always respected her and I feel many a doctor could not hold a candle to her! She was intelligent, quick witted, and extremely compassionate. I will miss her. Prayers and healing to the whole family.
