Fred Winans Obituary

Fred C. Winans
of Binghamton
Fred C. Winans lived 75 years doing what Fred wanted to do. He ate donuts- even though he was diabetic. He smoked cigarettes- even though he had one lung removed. He buttered everything- even after his quadruple bypass surgery. He wanted to die at home- and he did. He was predeceased by one daughter, Tina; his parents, Clair and Wilma Winans; and one baby brother, Billy. He is survived by his wife and caregiver, Lorraine (Barber) Winans of Binghamton; 4 children, Donald (Ellie) Winans of Binghamton, Terry (Glenn) Knapp of Johnson City, Karen Winans (Tilts) of Johnson City, and Chad (Crystal) Winans of Binghamton; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Kay (Jan) Huisman of Binghamton, Cheryl (Ken) Cutting of Masonville, NY, Betty (Chuck) Johnson of Triangle, NY, and Vicky (Jim) Green of Masonville; one brother, Randy (Robin) Winans of Sidney, NY; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred spent 48 years doing what he loved the most, installing fences for his company, Winans Fence Company. He passed his talents to his wife and sons, and they continue to operate the business. As Fred's health failed, he advised his family from the sidelines to successfully continue what he started. The family wishes to thank all the people at United Methodist Home and Lourdes Hospice Unit for caring so lovingly for Fred. His mispronunciation of words will forever be embedded in our hearts and will always bring a smile to our faces. His Archie Bunker-like personality will be missed greatly.
Family and friends are invited to the First Assembly of God Church, 255 Washington Street, Binghamton Tuesday, April 13, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon with services at 12:00 noon. Committal services will be at Chenango Valley Cemetery on Nolan Road with dinner to follow at the Church Café for family and friends following the service at the cemetery. The family requests bulbs or flowers are planted in Fred's honor as his spirit lives on! Arrangements by James V. DeMarco & Son Funeral Home, Port Dickinson, NY.

Lorraine & family, I'm very sorry to hear about Fred. He was a very good friend and neighbor. There isn't enough space or time to write everything I knew about Fred. The girls always wanted to visit your house and see Uncle Fred as they called him. I usually had a question or piece of equipment needing to be welded, or just stopping in for coffee and a chat. He'll be missed by all, but his memory will live on.

To the Winans family
I was very saddened to read about Fred’s passing. There was no one in the world like Fred, Fred was Fred. To this day I still miss the conversations I used to have with him when he would be fixing the fences at Coke on Walter Ave or at my home. I can still hear Fred say to me,” who was the dummy that put the fence up and closed off Walter Ave. I was proud to call Fred my friend.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

May the cool rain quench your flowers' thirst
Renew your spirit,
And wash your troubles away.
