Joan RUSSELL Obituary
March 18, 1928 - May 2, 2016
We have lost our vibrant source of inspiration and love. Joan was a brilliant mother, scout leader, teacher and friend who taught us to ski, canoe and camp while laughing at life's surprises. Born and raised in San Francisco to Marjorie and Chester MacPhee, Joan graduated with honors from Lincoln High and UC Berkeley. Her happiest days were with sorority sisters of ADiPi, and as leader of the "Fun Group" exploring the Sierras, Marin and Hawaii with her husband John, their three children and nine grandchildren. She raised her children in Kentfield, was an exemplary fifth grade teacher at Bel Aire School, Tiburon and headed Jr. Golf at MGCC. An avid golfer and hiker, she rarely missed a kid's sports event. In recent years Joan welcomed six great-grandchildren. We will forever remember the joy she brought to any gathering, her belief in all possibilities and her devotion to family, friends, books and birds. She is preceded in death by husband John and son Philip.
A celebration of her life will be Saturday, May 7 at 11:00 a.m., United Church of Christ, Petaluma. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Petaluma are encouraged.
