John APPLEGATE Obituary

APPLEGATE, John Whitney Age 78, passed away peacefully in his riverside home in Healdsburg on December 10, 2017. John was born September 24, 1939, in Bergen County, New Jersey to a kindly father and a dreadful mother. After sending himself to boarding school at Blair Academy and graduating in 1957, he enrolled in college and didn't stop until he had five degrees, including a Master's Degree in English Literature and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Columbia. He married Deborah Anne Neher (1941 - 2016) in 1964 and is survived by his sister, Judith Applegate; by his two loving children, Jennifer and Charles Applegate; by his adoring grandson, Timothy Applegate; and by hundreds of friends and patients whose lives he improved and enriched with his keen intellect, ribald humor, and a tender compassion that he held in his heart beneath a gruff and curmudgeonly mien. He was loved by more than he would credit, and he will be missed. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ACLU and/or the NAACP.

Tony Battelle, also of Blair's class of 1957 and 1958. RIP John. You and my brother Nick, class of 1960, dec. July 2012, had good times together in NYC as he was completing his MBA, also at Columbia University. You were among the many unique and talented individuals that made up the Class of 1958, and with whom I hope to reunite come June. We will be thinking of you and your memorable contribution to that uniqueness.

It was a pleasure and an honor to know John. I am particularly grateful for he and Deb bringing Jen and Charles into the world. My deepest sympathies to all who got to know and love him and will justifiably miss him.

My brother from another mother gave me joy, comfort, wisdom and, above all, a zany take on life that brightened my soul. Even in his dark times, he had kindness and love to share generously. When I remember our crazy youthful antics at Columbia and up until Charlie was born, I grin fiendishly , although I am crying quite freely now. Funny how little memories return. For example, No one could truss and carve a turkey like John. No one I know had such a great store of memorized poems to be trotted out on appropriate occasions. I watched him help raise two amazing children who carry his wit, intelligence and properly sceptical world view. He's not gone, thanks to them, but I do miss him fiercely . By the way, in the wonderful photo, are those kittens Ashie and Boufy?

He will always be my friend; he gave me advice, often when I didn't need it, and showed his compassion when necessary. We enjoyed some wild times together, and to this day wonder how we survived. Yes I will miss our periodic phone conversations. Hope he is resting without pain. And the best to his family.

I love you, Dad. And yes, as I promised I would, I caught your giant orange cat Rufous and wrangled him into my home where he is thriving. You shepherded and protected so many for so long; we all miss you, but you may finally rest in peace.

Hello Applegate Family,
We got to know John fairly well over the years and really enjoyed him as a patient. We used to see him often when he lived in Forestville. We were honored that he wanted us to continue to care for him after he moved to Healdsburg.I talked with him many times about medicine, politics and big business. He did not like big banks a sentiment that is easy to understand.I will miss his common sense approach to life and his loyalty. Please accept our deepest condolences.mark olson rph and staff at Forestville Pharmacy
