Phyllis Lusher Obituary

Phyllis Lusher
December 17, 1934 - July 14, 2023
Phyllis Anne Lusher (née McRae), 88, passed away on July 14, 2023, in New York City. She was born on December 17, 1934, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A keen intellect, she attended the University of Chicago's Hutchins Program at the age of 16 and completed her degree in Statistics in three years. It was at Chicago that she met her husband Robert F. Lusher. Together they had an exciting life, living in San Diego, New York City, Dakar, Hong Kong and London. Pioneers in Hong Kong in 1964, they spent 40 years growing a successful construction business which was responsible for many of the region's most iconic buildings.

When Robert died too young in 1999, Phyllis continued in the spirit of their adventurous life and traveled the world dividing her time with her children in Hong Kong, New York, San Francisco and Healdsburg. She was the rock of the family; a dignified matriarch in every sense. She leaves behind her devoted children Anne McMillen, and Tess, Robert and Alison Lusher. Phyllis was also the proud grandmother of seven: Lester Lusher, Alexandra Toles, Yoneo and Tasmin Arai, and Gus, Lucas and Xanthe Falloon. More recently she was thrilled to become great granny to Amelia, Lincoln and Aiden Toles.

Phyllis also touched many lives through charitable work supporting the arts and education. This included scholarships for Hong Kong students to the University of Chicago and performing arts organizations globally, including cinema, theatre, opera and classical music.

Phyllis will be missed by all who knew her.

I was just beginning to know Phyllis. I found her to be engaging, curious and interested in everything and everyone around her. Such a delight. I had lunch with her just before she left for New York and we had a great time. I had no clue I wouldn't see her again. My sincere condolences to the family.

Sending my heartfelt condolences. What an amazing life and a beautiful family. I had the good fortune to have met your Mom at the last Holiday party we threw before COVID/shelter in place. She was so lovely, we enjoyed getting to know her briefly. Sending you all so much love and peace of heart.

I met Mrs. Lusher once 3 years ago at her home in Healdsburg. She lit up the room with her grace, kindness, and intellect. What struck me most was her approachable sophistication. My deepest condolences to your family. Sending love, Laura

I´ve known Phyllis my entire life, and with every passing year I appreciated her more. Her understated brilliance, her love of culture, her loyalty, her wry wit - and most of all her utter devotion to her family. She never sought the limelight, but she was always such a superstar. I miss her already. Sending love to Annie, Tess, Rob and Alison and the rest of the gang. She will surely live on in them. Leigh
