Richard COWAN Obituary

COWAN, Richard "Dick" Elbert Died unexpectedly in Santa Rosa, California on July 1, 2015, at the age of 78. Dick is survived by his wife, Shirley Cowan of Sebastopol; daughter, Sue Godec and son-in-law Ken Godec, of Santa Rosa; and sons, Don Cowan and Larry Cowan, both of Sebastopol; by granddaughters, Missy Meyer and husband Kornell Meyer, Jennifer Cowan, Sara Cowan, Bethany Tomte and husband Mike Tomte, Donna Cowan, Jessica Cowan, Katie Godec; and by great-granddaughters, Kaia Meyer, Isla Meyer and Savanna Felsch; his siblings, Barbara Bennington, Rick Cowan, Linda Eggleston, Rob Cowan, Cathy Cowan, and Rory Cowan; and stepmother, Val Cowan. Dick is preceded in death by sons, Richard Cowan, Jr. and David Cowan. Dick was born on July 9, 1936 in San Francisco to Richard and Louise Cowan. In 1954 he joined the United States Army where he was a member of the military police and served in the South Pacific and Germany. He married Shirley Cowan, his high school sweetheart in 1956. Over the next six years, the couple welcomed five children. Dick began working for the United Parcel Service and later retired after 35 years, and in 1976 moved to his beloved home in Sebastopol, California. A funeral is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday July 11, 2015 at Hessel Union Church in Sebastopol, with a reception to follow at Negri's Restaurant in Occidental. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick's life.
