When I was about 5 yrs. old, I tried to be a "dare-devil" & fly down our steep driveway in a wagon; my chin & the concrete were introduced & I suffered a nasty split that required 16 stitches inside & out. Shortly after, we attended one of our family events at the adjacent properties of my grandparents, Weto & Kinney Perez, & the home of Uncle Alonzo, Tia Polina, Tia Inez, & Uncle Oscar. I remember feeling sad & ugly, with these black stitches that itched terribly & stretched across my chin. Alonzo leaned down, & touched my chin gently & told me not to worry. He assured me that "one day, it will all heal up & you won't see those anymore." The stitches did indeed go away, but a scar remains-but I've always been glad I have it; because to this day-35 years later, the first thing I think of every time I see my scar is Alonzo. It was just one of countless displays of his unyielding kindness.
