I thought of my friend and old college roommate recently when I was sent a photo album celebrating Vanderbilt University's 150 anniversary. Those two years in the 1960s along side Mike Quinn were so memorable. I miss him!

I just saw this obituary (1/19/24), and would not have, had I not read about Sports Illustrated's current troubles. Mike came and spoke to our journalism class at Elder High School in 1966. We all had stars in our eyes. I went on to a nearly 50-year career in newspapering, thanks to another Quinn, Mike's Dad, Joe, who helped me get my first job at the Hamilton Journal-News, from where I moved to The Cincinnati Post, then a partnership with my wife Nancy in publishing a niche newspaper called Express Cincinnati. To the Quinn family, my belated condolences and heartfelt gratitude. I can't overstate what Mike and Joe meant in my life. - Mike O'Connor, Glendale, Ohio

Steve your father was so kind to me back in the early 80s. My son Jimmy Gomez attended St Catherine“s with you. As a young single parent, your father treated me w regard and i will never forget his kindness. I will keep his legacy of kindness and acceptance forever active. I hope others who experienced the same will do so also. My heartfelt condolences. Hugs to you.

I met Mike in Aix-en-Provence the summer of '64 and we became off-campus roommates until graduation in '66. We went our separate ways but renewed our friendship in California, where I settled down to teach in Stockton while he worked at the Press Enterprise in Riverside. I think we last saw him at Morro Bay some years ago where he and Josette had rented a condo. I still have on my book shelf a copy of William Butler Yeats' collected poems that Mike used an English major at Vanderbilt, complete with all his notes. RIP Mike!
