I had Mr Hawthorne as my junior high school teacher in 73/74 when I grew up in Sunnymead, I remember him being sort of a quiet man but he had an underlying sense of humor and I enjoyed his class

Me and my siblings would like to send our sympathies to the Hawthorne family. My older sister Lorraine, who now lives back East remembered Mr. Hawthorne from Alessandro Junior High (now March Mountain High School). My older brother Ernie remembers his name but never had him as a teacher. I had Mr. Hawthorne as my English teacher during my 8th grade in 1967-1968. He was a great fan of the book "Cheaper By the Dozen" by Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth about a family with 12 kids. Plus, he liked Edgar Allan Poe. He seemed a giant of a man for my short stature of less than five feet. He seemed like a towering figure as he sat behind his desk in front of the classroom with the chalk board behind him. The windows of the class room were on the right side of him. He had darker hair then and wore glasses. We always had to study or read a book in his class and then write about whatever we had read. He emphasized that what we write has to be true to us or true to our experiences. Sometimes he even frightened me as he seemed like a very serious individual, one who did not tolerate nonsense. But, overall when looking back he was very genuine. I learned discipline from this man, and I later learned to be a little bit more serious of my homework. He was a very good teacher. I have fond memories of Mr. Hawthorne. He excused me from having to write anything in his class for about two weeks due to having stitches around my knuckles due to cuts received from washing an inside of a class that later broke one morning. My dad took me to the March Air Force Base hospital to have stitches put on the morning that it happened. My dad wrote out an excuse to show to my teachers explaining I had stitches on my right hand and could not write. My right hand was wrapped in bandages that whole time. Mr. Hawthorne was kind in excusing me from my assignments. Me and my brother Ernie wanted to go to Mr. Hawthorne's memorial on Jan. 24th at his son Richard's home, but we were unable to attend due to a 24th anniversary birthday celebration at the local Oasis Community Church, which happened around the same time as Mr. Hawthorne's memorial. The new council woman Ladonna Jempson gave a speech there. My brother helped put away equipment after the gathering. I hope our expression of condolences may suffice for now. May the loving memories of Mr. Robert Hawthorne be of much comfort to his family members for he was a Great Man. Perhaps, one day in the future my brother and I may stop by to express our appreciation with sincere condolences.

I taught science at Alessandro Junior High School from 1977-1979. Because my husband was serving in the Military at Rhein Main, Germany, my sons and I left Alessandro and lived in Germany for 18 months. However, it was a joy to know Bob whenever our paths crossed during faculty meetings. Yes, I remember, Bob; he was a gentleman.
